No, if you're disposing of a lipo, discharge down as close to 0.0v/cell as you can, at a low load. A single automotive 12v bulb should suffice for this.

Jay,
3V/cell will work - there probably isn't enough energy left in the cell to start a fire. Since the cell should not be used anymore - feel free to discharge as far down as you like - even 0V is fine. Discharging a cell that low will kill it, but it's not like you should try to save it.

I'd be real curious just how unstable these puff'd packs are. I can see ones that are swelled enough to break the seal, but the ones that are still sealed, makes me wonder.................is there any proof that they are really that unstable?

I mean there seems to be quite a few people with buldged packs and I'm sure not everyone has tossed them despite the reconmendation that one should do so.

I have 2 packs that show signs of puffing, and the guys at the track are starting to call me "puff daddy". lol

Curious minds want to know.

I wouldn't bet my house on that. If you're disposing of a cell, might as well kill it so it can't come back. As close to 0.0V as you can get is my vote, should prevent a cell from going zombie and coming back from the dead to bite you.

Curiosity killed the cat. Yourself or someone else can do all the testing you like. For me, any physical change to a pack means retirement.

So, any recommendation for a reliable yet affordable lipo? I have an orion pack I bought around the same time as the smc, which is still going strong without swellng, but they were pricey for what they are.

Nope, discharging below 3.0v causes irreversible cell damage, which could cause a fire if you were to try and CHARGE an overly dead cell.

Overcharging or physical damage to a lipo can lead to fire. Over discharging just makes the dead beyond recovery, which is perfectly fine for disposal.
