The weird thing is the 3 of us are all running Cyclones, and were all running 3.6 FDR. The race took place in San Diego, so the weather was not even all that hot, the motor was around 120deg while the esc was at around 110 deg. F. What could cause the cars to slow down to a crawl like it did?
FWIW: I have been gearing my cyclone around 3.5, same temps as you. Only saw the "slow to crawl" symptom once. Thought my battery was not charged all the way and dumped at the end of a heat. I have raced it plenty since then, not seen the symptom since.

the only thing i can recommend u check is the sensor wire on the ESC..when that is loose..it runs poorly.

Everything looked good on mine. Didn't have a temp gauge when I got to the car but I could hold my finger on the motor and ESC, 3 minutes into the race it just slowed to a crawl with what looked like a flashing orange light. I turned it off/on and it was fine. I was one of the other two that had an issue that day. Louie who won the main went in with the programmer and shut off thermal protection, as he had a thermal during the 2nd heat.

+100 on that. Had major problems with the sensor wires. Once it on sensor less mode, its a different animal altogether.

Yeah Charlie, MarkW is one of the 2 other guys who had the problem too, and the crawl problem happened to me twice. Once in a heat and the other time at the end of the main. Ill look into the sensor wire

Did a 5 min qualifier on Saturday and my temp was 190 coming off. Running 88 spur and 54 pinion on my Sprint 2. Thought I had a transmission ration of 2.13. So I thought I had a FDR of 3.47. Some sites have the Sprint 2 with a 2.43 transmission which will make my FDR at 3.96. Don't want to lose to much top end or acceleration. What gearing should I go with.

190 is way too hot especially after 5 minutes. You need to gear down 2 teeth I'd say (go to a 52 pinion).

I thought with the Stock Spec system you want the FDR around 3.5-6. Going with a 52 pinion would put me at 4.11.

You wouldn't want a 3.5-3.6 if it meant burning up your motor/speedo would you?

What spur pinion combo are you running? and what kind of temps are you getting @ 3.3 FDR?

Yup! I was the other Cyclone driver that had my Cirtix thermal on me. It was kinda wierd that it was three Cyclone TC cars all with 3.6 FDR that had problems with the esc. Last month I ran 3.3FDR same track, same conditions with no problems at all. On Saturday's race I ran fine the first qualifier , thermaled in middle of 2nd qual, and ran perfect in mains. I removed thermal protection for the mains. This was the first time i had ever seen this system thermal and Ive raced it a lot. Maybe Cirtix is real picky with Cyclones! LOL

BTW Derrick, I use 48 pitch gears, 69/45 with 2.167 internal gearing to achieve 3.32 FDR

I ran 69/41 on Saturday = FDR of 3.65

You know what i did notice though was that before I ran my 2nd qual I left my whole car out under the sun the get my tires a little warm. Im guessing maybe the electronics got pretty warm during the process and I pretty much started the race with an already hot esc.
