I got rid of some of the slop in the steering mechanism by doing the 'plastic bag trick' for all of the ball cups (you put a plastic bag onto the ball end and pop the ball cup over it; it cuts out a small circle of plastic which helps take out the free play). This didn't cure the up and down movement of the arms on the steering posts; for that you'd need some 4x6x0.1mm shims I think - I haven't got a clue of anywhere that might sell them though.

Tamiya proposes some shim sets in small bags. Inner Diameter from 3 up to 12mm (maybe more). There are 30 pieces in each bag: 10x0.1mm thick, 10x0.2 and 10x0.3. Enough to get rid of extra play anywhere, anytime... Definitely a must have.

Depends what surface your running on and with what tires,

generally I'd start with the kit set up, maybe pinks instead of golds, that's about all I'd change for the initial run

the futaba s9551 is a good servo - there's also a BL version of this servo, i just don't use them or have a part number

Any low profile (or narrow profile) is fine:
- KO PDS 2413 ICS (maybe the best one)
- Futaba s9550 or S9551 (s9551 got a bit more torque)
- Sanwa SDX 801.
- Team Orion Vortex Servo VDS 1007.

Is a low-profile servo required?

No, the servo doesn't have to be low profile. In fact I have a Ko Propo PDS 2367 ICS in at the moment and still have plenty of room for my electronics, but that's only because the Ko Propo KR-302f and Tekin RS Pro are really small. It would get quite tight if I was trying to fit in a GM or Speedpassion ESC in there. The advantages of a low profile servo include more space and lighter weight.
