Hudy Lathe Help - McMaster Bit Orientation
Hello,
I just received my Hudy Tech Lathe. It's my first lathe, and I'm having a little trouble figuring out just how to set it up.
My question is in regards to how the bit should be oriented. I am using an AL-4 bit from McMaster Carr as suggested by on Big Jims site. The site also stated that the bit would be used upside down, so for a lathe that cut right to left, such as is the case with the Hudy, you would need a left to right bit.
All this has me a bit (no pun intended) confused. Which way should the bit be oriented? The carbide insert is 'glued' to one side of the bit. Should this side be up, down, left, or right?

If you look at the picture, the top left corner is the cutting part. Turn the bit 180 degrees so that it is facing down and to the left and have it facing the armature. That way it is the first part to touch the comm as you move from right to left. Make sure the armature is spinning upwards.
Don't forget to shim it so that the cutting tip is .15-.20 above the v-block. I measured it by using the .20 shim and placing it between the cutting bit and v-block. If it fit then I know I had the right clearance.

That's the rigjt one.
Since our lathes use the cutting bit facing down, and in your case the bit moves from right to left you need an AL bit (L means left, but since it's mounted "upseide down" that's the correct one)
You probably need a little shim (included with the lathe) under the bit. It works perfect.
