I'll put my hand up for doing this too!
I only had it together for about 1 second. I didn't even try it again until I replaced the cap. Wired it up correctly, and it goes fine. In saying that, it was very brief and I got no smoke!
Like said, you have probably fried some fet's, so even if it works, it may struggle under load and you will wreck more of it!

Did you see where the smoke came from? Did it come from the cap or from the ESC itself? If just from the cap you'll be fine just replacing the cap. If from the ESC itself it may have other damage. My guess is that if it is working you probably just blew the cap.

The unit would not work if he had a bad fet.

The smoke most likely came from the cap.

I'm curious, could hooking it up backward damage it even with the switch off?

I know it would still blow the cap but could it kill the esc too?

It came from the cap and was the oozing liquid. I touch the wrong connectors for less than a second. soldered on a new cap and now just need to clean up the wires to the motor to test it out. I will post back once I get a test run on Wednesday. Thanks for all the replies.

Warranty is 120 days guys, but it doesn't cover reverse polarity. We'll still work with you on it though!

If it still works, you are very lucky my friend, I reversed the plugs on my RS in my Slash because the battery I was using was backwards from the other 3 I had and it touched less than a second, snapped and it's been dead since. I've since quit using bullet connectors

Not always, but I think they usually puff out a bit bigger than their usual size...
