I don't think any of the manufacturers are producing 2S batteries for the current 1/12 scale offerings, but there are a few guys using A123 cells wired in series. If you search the forums for A123 or LiFe related entries, you should find more information.

HobbyCity sell a small 2-cell soft pack lipo that will fit. They are about 2200mA and cheap.
You can also use the small hard case lipo that are designed for the 1/18 scale TCs and buggies. these are 1800mA.

Or

You can just squeeze a 2S pack of the A123 26650 cells in the 12r5.1.
When two are wired in series you end up with a 2300mA 6.6V pack.
You need to run the shock flat and change the rear shock ball to one where a bolt runs up through the top pod plate and through the ball. Xray T2 lower shock ball and ball cup works.
This is what i am running in mine and they are great. You can fast charge the cells. With a 21.5 run time will be ages (my 10.5 is well over 10 minutes), it will have a serious amount of punch and you do not need a receiver pack or booster.

Enjoy.

The Duratrax 1800 mah hard case lipo fits with room to spare. I'll try it with an old stock brushed motor the the next time I'm at the track. That battery combined with Mabuchi/Johnson/silver can motors night make for an super cheap and interesting spec class. But it'll probably never happen.....

I am with you Manning.
With all the old chassis and brushed parts out there could be a good entry level case and very cheap. But also as you said "not going to happen"
The two A123 cells cost me less then US$18 for the pair. Can't beat that for value considering their characteristics and performance.

My friend tried running 1/18 2S lipo + Black can on R5 before. The speed is acceptable but the black can is pretty hot. The car is very light so he needed to make driving adjustments.

I have also tried 2SA123 + 10.5R on CRC. About the same speed as his car, but my motor is super cool. I still have a lot of gearing to play with. Weight wise, 2SA123 is about 2cell NiMh, so the car is still very light. I also have to move the middle damper upwards in order to fit the 2SA123. No booster here and the battery can be fully charged in 20 minutes. The pack will last at least 20 mins of play time.

None of our setups are race legal... but we dont care as we just want to have fun around the track.

note: A123 are awesome for RC. I also use them on my touring, F1 and offroads!
