BEST ONROAD BODY
 

What is the best body for a touring car on carpet? I heard that the body can make a world of difference and I want to get the best one. Which ones are the best, and which are the worst. Thanks.

Rubber tire = Mazda Speed6 or LTC-R
Foam tire = R9-F (imo)

ChristopherKee is right, but I seriously hate those Mazda Speed and Stratus bodies. It is so vanilla IMO.

I'll trade off a bit of performance difference that I can't detect for something different.

Currently, I'm painting up an HPI #7037 Honda Accord body for mine. It's a throwback to the 1997 style Honda Accord Sedan...

I think my next body after this would be something vintage...

Do you plan on racing the Accord body or is it for looks.

well, I'm mostly a basher these days, I haven't entered a race since I was a kid...

I love the looks primarily, since I drive the 97 accord sedan in real life, I'm trying to paint it up the same shade of color as my big car... :lol:

The body itself doesn't look too bad, I can't tell how big of a difference there is between the HPI 7037 Accord body and the Stratus/Mazda/etc. body...

The HPI Accord was a popular race body years ago. The handling won't be as good as the new bodies out there that have had all these years of knowledge and development behind them, but it would still be a better than a truly realistic body.

Seems to me all the Protoform bodies are pretty good. From what I've read they all handle a bit differently, with some being more aggressive than others. The most aggressive is the R9-R, then the LTC-R, the Mazdaspeed 6, and then the regular Mazda 6 being the least aggressive. I'm not sure where the DNA would slot in there. Hot bodies also has some pretty good bodies, but I haven't tried them yet.

I use the Mazda6, as it is a good all round shell for indoors and outdoors.

Sometimes, being too aggressive (and the shell can contribute to the cars handling being aggressive/car turns in faster) is not the way to win a race, for others it is their driving style and still gives them a worthy win, or good result.

You have to be pulling very consistant laps to make the most out of the bodyshell choice though. Sometimes what is felt different by one may not by another.

I am tempted to use a HotBodies Type B-C next...

Lately, I've been really into the "GT" or "JTCC" style of bodies. I drive off-road, where most of the bodies looks like it's some galactic outer-space jetson-esque models, so it's kinda of a nice change of pace to get some "realistic" looking bodies...

I'm really loving Tamiya's stuff.

I've compared the HPI #7037 Accord Body to Tamiya's PIAA Accord body (both of which are 1997 JTCC Honda Accord bodies), and Tamiya's body, wins hands-down in terms of detail and shape (my HPI was slightly crooked).

But HPI's are cheap in price, Tamiyas, you pay for what you get - absolutely highest level of detail and quality. I just cringe when I put my crappy painting skills on a Tamiya body...

Tom - I used to feel the way you do back in the pre-Stratus days. We all used to run bodies we thought were cool and let's face it, no one thinks a Stratus is cool. A lot of people resisted when the fast guys all started running the Stratus, but after running one back-to-back there's no going back to a scale body for anything other than spec racing (TCS, RCGT, etc.) If you're a basher, then run whatever you want. Since he's asking about carpet and performance, I take it that he's planning on racing. The downforce and balance offered by the race body aerodynamics is significant, and if you can't feel it, then I'd suggest running a race body vs scale body back-to-back on the same chassis.

While I understand the aesthetic benefits of scale bodies, I've grown to like the stylized lines of race bodies. I think they provide a much better canvas for painting. Luckily the 1/10 rules (and the new 1/12 rules) keep these things from looking like slot car bodies. I've never been as excited about a new body as I am about the Protoform AMR-12 1/12 body.

And to offer an answer to the question, the Mazdaspeed 6 seems to be a good all-around choice, backed with an R9 in case you need more steering.
