Hey Guys!

I don't know if there is a specific thread going for these types of motors but I wanted to start one to see what people are running,what specific thing they are doing to get power or RPM out of them and just gneral knowledge about these motors.At the track I run at we have a regular Tamiya 540 and Tamiya mini 540 classes running.I am the new kid on the block so I want to learn more.So everyone ,be my guest!

I have some older 540 johnsons.They have the Black metal endbells on them.One has 4 vent holes on the side of the can and 2 have only 2 vents.Are any of these the good Johnsons everyone is looking for?

Actually it's funny you should bring this up, I raced silvercan 540's for the first time last weekend and we ran a 10 minute main. I made about 12-13 minutes flat out with 2400 cells. It makes you work alot harder to try to do well, much much harder then I'm used to. Zero straight advantage, zero punch and still pretty fast around the track. I had a blast and I can't wait to race another 10 minute main (5min mains, stuff that).

I'm running a standard johnson 540. How to get power, gear that sucker as high as possible without being too sluggish when pulling out of corners.

John, I know that theres a common process where one dips 3/4 of the motor.....or shall i say sit in water for about 60-90mins. The water coursing between the comm and brush will help speed-up the break-in process and will shape the brush faces so they conform perfectly to the comm. Ive done this particular process with my silver johnson 540 motor and had gotten 13,700rpm@5volts. Now thats a pretty fast motor considering that a good 540 motor pulls 10,000@5volts. However, you might want to talk to Mike and Dave. Mike has this one 540 motor thats pulling 14,500@5volts. It seems to me that the Johnson 540 motors fair better than the mabuchi motor when i did the dipping process. Again you might want to talk to mike. He did some crazy A$$ "secret" concoction/solution where he dips his motors in. Looks like its working for him Hope this helps.

These motor can be very fast. The speed of these motor are crazy. It can reach more than 20000rpm at 8V. There's so many ways to break in these motor. I am still trying out myself.

Got johnsons[newer Tamiya kits],mabuchi[from my sand scorcher parts] and my favorite the Lemans 540. Tried all three and the Johnsons have more torque,mabuchi is in the middle and the lemans 540 is the beast. I've heard wd40,Prolong,metal polish,mothers polish for the bushing. Reverse spin[polarity switched]?We should have the mini cooper race 8 minutes instead of 5 minutes.

I do remember 1 thing about these motors, most of them tend to run better backwards than forwards! This was the ticket when I was running them in legends class.

I am wondering 2 things

1. What are the best ways to break in a mabuchi silver can motor?

2 Has anyone found a way to bring back a motor that has turned into a dog?


I have been trying some things but i wanna see if anyone has some ideas that i havent tried.

Where can I find a good tutorial about how to break in a Mabuchi? It is for a Tam 23T Sport Tuned...
how do you dry quickly the motor after you remove it out water?

Utieh, do not water dip or in other way break in that black can motor (except the bushings)! The brushes are sooooo soft, they wear out quickly. I know a few people didn't know this at the North American finals (we used the black cans in GT2) and ruined their motors. Their best runs are normally the first 4, and then there's a significant drop off.
