I've got 4.08 (I am running 21.5) but that needed to change the internal ratio of the car (I have now 1.4166 stock being 1.7). I run 34/98 in .64 pitch. If yo use .48 it will be very difficult to get to 4.5 without huge pinions and I am not sure the car can accomodate that.

You might want to look into 64 pitch but even then I am not sure you can get away with it.

To change the internal ratio of the car you need to get a different set of centre pulleys (with higher tooth count), change the belts and make your own layshaft/spur holder.

You dont need to change the internal ratio of the car, you simply need a smaller spur gear, if you are having trouble finding larger pinion gears.

for my 17.5, I run an FDR around 4.1 (duo 2, very large outdoor track), and I run a 100tooth 64 pitch spur gear. You can get xray spurs at nexusracing.com or stormerhobbies.com.

On my T2 I am running a 96t spur with a 35 pinion and coming out with a 4.663 final drive ratio. A 36t pinion would come out to 4.533.

I haven't installed a 36 or 37 so I can't say for sure. I can check it out tomorrow if you want. Right now my cars are packed up and ready for tonights races.

Of course you don't have to change the internal ratio. But then you have to use huge pinions like Capt'n says (I guess he's using a 41 or 42 tooth) and I hate those huge pinions.

The other problem is that there might not be Xray spurs available (or easily accesible which is my case) and using other brands means you will have to fiddle around setting the mesh by doing the forward screw on the motor, then removing the spur to do the other one and finally reinstalling the spur.

But my main aim was to move away from having to buy more Xray spurs when I already had almost all the sizes I care to have in both 64 and 48 pitch. For me, changing the internal ratio was a fun exercise in engineering and optimisation that has eluded the Hudy team.

I don't think you can use anything above 35 with 96 in 48 pitch.

64 pitch pinions around the 40 tooth mark, are very very common. You can get them from nexusracing as well. I THINK im running 100tooth spur, and 41 or 42 pinion to get my FDR around 4.1. And you don't need ALL kinds of gears... simply get the one for the FDR you are shooting for.

For example you want an FDR of 4.5, lets say you decide to go 64 pitch, and choose the 100 spur. Go to nexus and grab a pair of 100 spur gears (you should get a spare). You simply need a 38tooth 64pitch pinion, and you are ready to go. For some tuning, get a 37 and a 39. in case you want to gear up or gear down.

Seems simple to me, and a 38tooth 64pitch pinion is not a "large" pinion gear.

Sure, that sounds OK, but don't forget he has to buy those pinions/spurs first. If that doesn't work, he has to buy again. And so on. If you could try before you buy it would be easy. Having a collection of spurs/pinions is not mandatory, of course, but after years of racing they tend to accumulate and when you realise you've got more money than a kit cost in pinions/spurs you don't really feel like buying any more.

And sure, it may not look like a big size but remember you want to have a pinion almost half the size of your spur and to me that is just too big. I prefer a lower ratio between spur and pinion sizes. That's just me.

That was my guess. A 104 in 48 pitch will not allow gear mesh for the FDR you're chasing. Not sure about 64 pitch.
