Default The right way to shim a brushless motor

Like the title says, I would like to know how to shim a brushless motor the right way. The way I do it is quite simple (and probably wrong), I just put shims on both sides of the rotor until I have aprox 0.5mm - 1.0mm play. But I don't know if this is the right way. Out of the box the motor comes with 0.5 - 1.0mm, but is there a 'sweet spot' in the magnetic field that I have to find?

Hope somebody can clearify these issues.
