.03 wont let the pack peak very well at all.Voltage wont be as great.
Charge at the highest amp rate your heart desires but make sure you have a way of keeping them cool if charging about 5.
You can use 2 different ways.
If you can time the pack to cutoff right before racing charge at 5.-6.0 amps at a .07 which was STANDARD for all nicad chargers.
If you like to repeak packs then charger at 5.-6. at .05 and then repeak at .02
Nicad walls are thicker in most of the cells and require the higher peak detect to warm them up so they give out good voltage.

Dont turboflex new cells unless they have been sitting for a long time in the case of the store or wherever your getting them.Dont be afraid to ask how long.

Start with a LOW setting on turboflex and go from there.

One of the best things I have seen for stick packs is discharge them to 5.4 at 20 amps and then get the Orion Stick pack equalizer.

On the breakin of those motor's I still do the water dipping.Never fails.

Tex, how long do you dip your motors in the water? Could you post your dipping method?

I do the same as tex, water dip. I use a 3 or 4 cell pack for a minute and your motor should be broken in, then clean it out with motor spray and oil the bushings(I clean it the same way). 540 is all about momentum, if you can keep the momentum your able to gear them very high.

Here's a tutorial on how to get your 540 going.
