48 Pitch vs 64 Pitch

Allright I have a question for everyone, 48 Pitch or 64 Pitch, which one do you prefer and why.

48- its easier to set the mesh, although if i need to fine tune the gearing i go to 64

For a TC3 outdoor I use 48 and indoors I use 64 (rocks break teeth).

For Losi XXX-S with a covered drive line I always use 64 pitch.

I find you have to change the spur less with 64 pitch to get the desired gearing.

As far as setting the gear mesh, I set mine by sound so there is no difference between the two. I also feel it's the easiest and most accurate way to set the mesh.

ive always used 64 pitch. even on my touring car ive never striped a spur gear and it doesnt take more than 1 minute to set my mesh.

I personally don't have any problem setting gear mesh with 64 pitch either, even on my XXX-S and TC3, heck I can do it with my eyes closed..... but then I can also tell the difference between tire inserts with the tires mounted and glued.....LOL....no really!!!

on my tc3, i use 48p for stock and 64p for mod. problem is, 64p strips easily in our track because of all the dirt and pebbles, but 48p holds up longer.

But do you think that running the biggest spur you can get on the car which would be 64 pitch, give you more punch or should I say better perfromance over 48 pitch or even BK pitch for that matter.

Well the theory is, a spur with a larger diameter is like using a larger lever to turn the shaft over.. so imagine you have a bolt that needs removed, but it is really tight, so what you do is get a longer wrench, or find a way of extending the handle to get more leverage on it. So in theory the motor needs less torque to get the car rolling and thus the car will feel more "punchier"

This is not really dependant on the number of teeth, but the distance from the very center of the spur to the outside edge. So the spur could be 64 or 48 pitch and still take advantage of the "bigger wrench".

I never bought into the bigger spur = more leverage theory, because it doesn't take into account that you need a bigger pinion to maintain the same ratio. A bigger spur may indeed be more leverage, but the bigger pinion cancels it out.

I use 64 pitch on my stuff. It's not too hard to set the mesh (even though I get it wrong sometimes). I use a big 'ol 128 tooth spur, because it lowers the motor=lower CG. I've never really thought about getting more leverage from a bigger spur, though.

Trips: That's why it's a theory, and not fact....LOL

I like running 64 pitch, because it allows smaller changes in the gear ratio. That way I can fine tune my gearing..
