Default Short Stack Gearing/1:10 Touring cars

I've been searching everywhere with no clear answer but do you gear a short stack motor Low(I.E 4.0 and up)? Last time I ran a 3.5,3.7 FDR the motor temp was at 187deg

Btw motor is a Reedy 17.5 Mach3 Short stack.

It really varies from track to track, depending on size. Are you running a fan on the car? I haven't run 17.5 in a while but in USGT 21.5t at our local track I'm geared at 3.04 FDR.

Yes I do run a Fan on the motor and I ran it 2 weeks ago at Leisure hours

I don't know how the Mach 3's behave, but my Mach 2 is very picky about the end bell timing setting. Beyond 30 degrees, it just gets hotter without going faster. Your gearing will also need to change a bit with timing.

I didn't mess with the Endbell Timing at all..just wanted to see how it performs with stock Endbell

Every motor will vary what it likes for timing but typically 30-40 degrees advance is average with a 3.8-4.0 fdr on a med size track (with a good fan and batt). Certain motors like a little more timing even, like my Trinity 24k 17.5

I would go down to 20-30 degrees on something like a 3.5-3.7 fdr.

If you are not adjusting timing along with gearing, you are leaving a lot left on the table.

I been running a Mach 3 17.5 in TC. Started with 48* timing at around 4.0 gearing on a track that is about 78x40

Key thing here is short stack which just loves RPM. Crank up the timing and see how low you can gear it. It makes all its power on the top end so you pretty much want to keep it there. If your buds are running 3.7 then I'd start around 4.5 and go down from there. The lower the gear the higher the RPM and the more power off the corners.

Check your drag brake, too high can lead to high motor temps.

FWIW when I've run 17.5 at Leisure with Trinity or Motiv motors (never had a Reedy) I was always in the low 3's which seems typical on that track. If they are running the full back straight I would think you would need to be in the 3.2 or lower range.

And out there you generally won't see any more heat in the motor when you gear it up like that because it's running where it want to be, not over revving.
