I'm sure there will be another Tamiya F1 at the end of 2012. Shoot, they are getting just as bad as in 1/10th touring where there is a new chassis every year.
i missed out on the X1....whats the next best option for rubber tire racing???
thinking of either the PRO or BLACK SPECIAL which i can get......i know the PRO would be fine but the BLACK SPECIAL has alot of aftermarket parts...or just buy the standard and go from there???

both of those, depending on where you look, are listed as discontinued...

kinda 'stuck' with either the F60 or McClaren, then adding the hop-ups as needed

Either get a normal ferrari f60 or mclaren f104 and upgrade it to an x1 or get a f104w gp. Either leave it as is or get a f104 front end for it. Pretty cheap and easy to fit. I think the chassis and t bar design on the 104w-gp would likely be better (having as much grip as a 104 x1 but being more durable)

Or you could stick to the pro (or pro black special) which both have the same hopups (just the black special has them in black instead of blue). You will need to find a frp chassis and top deck though which will cost about the same in the end as just going the f60 or wgp route.

yep just noticed the F104WGP...looks nice except the front end.....rest looks like the X1
also the black special has full alloy parts as where the pro does not.....you will still need the alloy motor plate etc...

the f104wgp is around $10 more than the black special...either way i will sill have to buy wheels and tires for them both
having said that.....i could just buy the f104 front end first and is the rear end wider than the f104??

thanks j-pap for your help

You will need to buy wheels and tyres for both. With the wgp you may need to buy new wings/body if you change to the f104 arms unless you change how you cut out the body (f104 arms sit about 2cm back from the f103 ones). Doable (done it myself) but just have to be careful not to cut too much off.

The rear is identical. Only reason the wgp ends up wider in the rear is due to the wider rear wheels from the f103. If you put f104 wheels on it will be normal.

I'd download the f104 x1 manual and see what parts it uses for the suspension. Think you would only need some ball ends, the arms (F parts), camber plate and king pins to convert but not 100% sure.

Should only cost about $20 to convert it.

The hex's are the same. Just keep an eye on ground clearance. I think the outside diameters of the wheels are the same. Inside diameter is smaller. Someone else might be better at answering that one.

The manuals are on the tamiya website. Just look up the product and the link to the manual link is near the top.

Yup inside diameter of the F104 wheels are bigger.
You can run F104 front wheels on a F103 but not F103 wheels on a F104.
You can use them on the F104 tho.

Yes the WGP does come with the damper tube setup introduced on the x1.

If you go with the pro or black special F104 you will need to change the stiff decks to the short upper deck and the fiberglass chassis as well as add the high traction t-bar for rubber tire racing.
