Follow up and I was running mod0 software. Apparently mod2 is better for off road, learn something new every day. I wouldn't have been running more than the defaults for boost, timing, DDRS or whatever, etc. 8.5 convert to 7.5 on the same pinion killed my ESC, no reset no defaults no new firmware upload fixed it. Guess I'm going to stick it on ebay one day as faulty.

The Speed Passion software and program box are excellent, as is (by all accounts) the ESC I had. I just wish Speed Passion had been a bit more realistic about the motors it supports. I heard basically a mix of things, down to 5.5t probably blinky, 7.5t normal use and 8.5t with hybrid boost is what I recall but my sources might have been wrong. I am pretty sure 7.5 should have been supported according to SP own website when I bought it.

Oh well, magic smoke is a good learning tool. I will switch to a cheap TSKY or maybe a Losi Xcelorin which I now have the program tool for at least. I'll be sticking to 7.5, 8.5 didn't do it for me and I'll also be sticking to my fair stock of SP 3.0 motors. At least I have a few sets of bullets for them now!

If anyone has a use for a broken Reventon R, sans wires switch and fan, and lives in the UK and doesn't mind postage drop me a PM. Easier than trying to sell a broken thing on ebay I reckon. I also have the program box and original USB mini cable.

I got the esc today. It sure is a nice looking unit. I use 4mm bullet connectors so I'll have to change those but at least it has a deans end on it so i don't have to solder one on.

I downloaded the file from Solara's dropbox. Hopefully I can figure out everything

I ordered some stuff from Speed Power a couple of months ago. My shipment arrived quickly. Having said that, I think they're clearing out existing stock. I don't think Speed Passion is producing anything anymore.

Speed Power is more just a distributor of Speed Passion products and other brands.

They did just get a new shipment of Pro ESCs from overseas.

I managed to update the firmware on my LED programmer to V1.4 with no issue. I have no idea where it came from. I didn't see it in the zip I downloaded from Solara. I'll have to see if it works on my LCD one when it gets here.
