Brushless TC3 Gearing Questions

Brushless TC3 Gearing Questions
Hi all,
Of those of you running Novak's Brushless setup in a TC3, what gearing are you using? [spur/pinion gear numbers]
Currently I have a 27 tooth pinion and the stock 72 tooth spur, for a FDR of 6.67
Has anyone run a 28 tooth pinion with a 72 tooth spur?
I am going for top end, since the brushless has enough torque to break traction, even with the 27 tooth pinion.
Thanks!

I don't have a TC3 but ran brushless in my pro3. A final drive of 6.67 is already pretty low. Anyhting less than 7 with the brushless and you are risking overheating the esc and causing damage. One guy at my track got the esc so hot that the heatsink on top melted into the case. Most of the racers at my local track ran from 7.3 to 7.

Novak specifies that FDRs should be within 6.5 - 7.3
I have been running this FDR the entire time I've had the brushless setup. I did have the motor throw out the motor shaft, but Novak had a run of brushless setups that had that problem.
I suspect that the guy at your track who melted the ESC was not running within the 6.5 - 7.3 range. The TC3 has a tranny gear ratio of 2.5, and 72/27 * 2.5 = 6.67, which is my FDR.
How are you computing your FDR?
I have used my Raytek MT-4 temp gun on the motor, ESC, and batteries after a full pack racing, and have not found it to be hot at all... I believe the ESC was running 140 which isn't bad and the motor was around 110 [fahrenheit].

Sorry I thought Novak said nothing below 7. I always ran around 7 and it was plenty fast.
same as you: FDR=spur/pinion*internal ratio
A 28 in your case will drop you to 6.43, might cause it to overheat, might not.
You could switch to 64 pitch and get smaller changes in ratio and get closer to 6.5
I suppose that with good throttle control you can go lower than 6.5 without problems.
I don't know what the guy at my track was doing. He burns up stuff all the time. He has run the same motor as me in pan car with the same rollout and smoked his motor half way through the race. Then he geared down and still smoked a motor.

I use 28-72 with my Novak BL, stock mode, big track.
It is hot after run, but not burning hot. I place a small 5V fan on top of ESC heatsink fins. No problem so far.

GTO2, I am assuming you are running a TC3 as well?
And when you say "stock mode", is that the 27 turn emulation mode that the ESC has built-in?

I suppose so. I don't exactly know what Novak's setting/definition for stock, but it's a 'limited' speed. The unlimited mode is compare to a 10T motor or something, if I remember it correctly.

Yeah, Novak says it's equivalent to a 10t mod motor, but in actuality, it's closer to a 12t mod motor. Not that I care, because when the 10t or the 12t guys have to pit to switch batteries, I can go another 5+ minutes
2400 matched nicads get me 15-20 minutes of run-time They usually get about 8 minutes, if I remember correctly.
What kind of run-time do you get on "limited" mode with your BL TC3?
