i run my 13.5 lipo with an SPX at 4.11 and it flys
motor is never over 70 degrees C and the speedo is 39 degrees
i have heard the top guys here run 3.75 on some of the longer straight circuits but they cook them !!!

Anyone tried one of these speedies with a Losi 17.5? I have hit the wall with similar top end speed on profiles 7 and 8 with gearing between 3.9 and 5.2. NOrmal TC SPEC users are gearing at around 3.5 but im not game to go there on profile 7 or 8. Punch out of the corners is quiet different but the top speed thing is puzzling me. If i switch it back to profile 6 on these gearing's there is a noticeable drop in top speed and punch out of corners is similar to the higher profiles. Very strange. I have not bumped the timing at all on this motor in fear of blowing it up but maybe this is the bit im missing. Any advice appreciated, Benzaah...

giving me a final drive of 4.11:1
my DX3S is set to 100% throttle travel anf 70% brake travel because i am agressave on the brakes and i over brake if it is set higher

12r5 1 cell lipo
is there anyone out there running one cell lipo with spx and orion 13.5...if so could you give me an idea of where i should be on rollout..the track is 70x30..has more turns than a subdivision...i am looking for profile information and so forth..anything that can get me in the ball park..and it is carpet...thanks in advance...

I think I finally found the sweet spot for my 17.5 SP Ultrasportsman on the SPX. With a SMC lipo, I'm running a 4.07 FDR on profile seven and it comes off the track in six minutes at about 155 F in ~90 F ambient temps. I've found that any small deviation in profile or gearing makes the motor feel quite weak or overheat. The brakes have always been excellent with this speed control and motor combo. I've already ordered a Novak 17.5 though, and I guess I have to do a comparison.
I use the same electronics for my 13.5 car, except the motor of course, which is a Novak 13.5SS. The FDR I am using is 6.1 on profile seven and the motor temps about the same as my SP 17.5 after six minutes. I'm going to try gearing a tooth down soon; that should be about perfect for our track as I may need a slight bit more punch coming off the last corner and going into the straight. The brakes on the Novak aren't as good as the SP, but overall I feel that it is a better motor that isn't so finicky with FDR, power profile, and temps.

2. Driving style. If I'm pushing hard in practice to click off fast laps, the motor gets much hotter than in a race when I'm driving with a little more sanity.
3. Airflow within the car.*
4. Drivetrain friction.
5. Middle hole isn't the exact same timing from one DUO to the next.
6. Rotor strength. A weaker rotor that's seen a few 200+ heat cycles will pretty much always run hot. Stronger rotors = cooler motors.
* Because I see such a wide swing in temps with these new ESC's, I've started running a fan on my motor. r1wurks makes a nice fan mount (I hope he makes one for a single fan, maybe even 30mm) that seems to lower the temp on my motors 30-40 degrees when used in conjunction with the Muchmore high RPM fan. I'm a believer. My motors don't fade, and I can gear them up (and get more speed) without cooking them.
