Default 17.5 gearing

Im really torn. I run a SP17.5 (no timing adjustments) with my SPX (profile 7), and have had the car set at 3.4 FDR for the last 2 race meets and have been doing consistant times compared to my 2007 Sphere on profile 6. I do notice an increased aggression, but it is only minor.

Should I gear down to say 3.6-3.7 and see if i can get the turbo to kick in and I can also get more punch out of the car?

Our track is large (225m total) with a 1/2 hairpins 1/2 half speed corners.

I think you will find the car to be faster if you gear down. Most local racers are running a 3.75-4.0 final drive in 17.5 if they are using profile 7-8. Of course that depends on a lot of other variables! But I suspect your motor is not winding out all the way with a 3.4 FDR.

I have some time off next week in Western Australia so I will be able to do some testing on the big Nitro Track they have (50m+ straight).

I will run profile 7, FRD 4.0 then 3.9 down to 3.4 and see how the times and temps compare.

I run the big LRP fan in hotter conditions when the temperatures get above 25degrees celcius (70-80f) to keep my junk kooler.

My initial impression is that you are geared too high but I would definitely try to experiment and see what happens. My track is much smaller than yours so my set up may not work for you. Let us know what happens.

Today i ran between a 28 and a 34 tooth pinion on profile 7 and middle hole timing on a Ion 2 17.5. I found my fastest laps were coming with the 31 tooth even though it was heaps faster with the bigger pinions it was just too fast and the brakes and punch out of the corners and up the hills were heaps better with the smaller pinion. Temps started maxing out around 185f at 34 tooth so i did not go any higher obviously. Anything under 28 was not fast enough.

Well I came to a pretty dang good set up. I ended up at about 6.1 FDR, profile 8, 13.5 duo 1 middle hole, and a SMC 4K 28C. I also ran the same set up with a Novak motor with timing full and they were both fast. The duo has some power over the novak, but the novak worked pretty good. At speed world (173 foot straight) Both motors come off at around 150-160 after 6 mins. Awesome infield and straight speed

Today was my first day experimenting with the SPX and I have some questions.
The track is 40x80,the motor is a Duo with the timing @ zero,I ended up on profile #7 and a 4.94 fdr.The temp was 110 degrees after 5 minutes.
Am I gearing it right? Should I mess with the timimg? Thanks

You didn't actually say what motor you are using, but no, 110degF is too low.

Does that 173 foot straight include the pits or something???

Try middle hole timing but drop an extra pinion tooth just in case it gets a bit hot.

Heya Ben,

At the state titles, the boys were running an FDR of around 3.4-3.6 with the Sphere TC-Spec... so I think starting out at around 4.0 should be pretty good.

Tekin RS Pro.

The SPX is the ESC to have for Stock classes in TC but the lower voltage stops the extra timing from doing anything usefull.
I would go for the Tekin RS Pro as the turbo feature actually works with 1s.

Skiddins

P.S. I have owned and run both in GT10

I've been running 13.5 in my TC5 and switched to 17.5 a week ago because of low turn out. I noticed I was out motored by over half the racers running with my older 2007 Sphere comp (with Duo and SMC 40c 5200). Is the difference in gain in the SPX (from sphere comp) running both 17.5 and 13.5 noticeable enough to make much difference...or more like bearly noticeable??
