New Class; 1/12th 4WD Brushless Pan Car
I ordered two Kyosho Spada's to play around with, and I think they are some of the most innovative creations to come out of Kyosho since the SuperTen GP with the 4-stroke and OS LD engines. I think it would be a very popular class if Kyosho weren't stingy bastards and would give us the same toys our Japanese counterparts. Not that we can't have them, it's just the parts support is bad enough for Kyosho as it is, but for something that they don't even sell here, prepare to spend long times away from your toy.
But having a closer look at the toy, and all the conversions of nitro to electric 1/8th buggies, Truggies, 1/8 onroad. That's when I got to thinking. What about a brushless and lipo Spada? I am asking for your ideas on what motors and batteries and all that stuff you guys would suggest for a car like this. I have a KO Propo BL speedo, and a Castle Creations Sidewinder and Mamba Micro. I think it would be a cool toy. What do you guys think? |
Not a big fan of 1/12 scale, but an electric 4WD belt car, dose seem like an interesting idea. I would put a Novak Havoc in it, thought I'm not sure on what LiPos to put into it.
What would be the pros and cons over a 2WD pan-car? |
Had'nt seen this car before
Looks Kewl though! But also pretty tight on space? I think a 13.5 system would work well in there especially on 2S LiPo. What 2S LiPo to run is a hard call? Does'nt look like you could fit anything hard cased in there? Maybe a softcase 2100mah pack? But this would limit motor choices as well as runtimes. |
I think some of the speed 400 size motor might be the ticket for this car. Use a Tekin R1 or RS for the small size. For a cheap motor for experimentation maybe something like this on a 3S.

It's been tried before...though it might be time to try it again. The HPI Micro RS4 is based off of an old Kyosho 4wd 1/112th pan car design. If anything I would rather see that come back instead of a converted Spada because there will at least be some rear suspension.

Ive got a 25 year old Kyosho Fantom that the Spada really reminds me of. It was OEM electric, 4WD, and 1/12th scale. Not many of them around though.

less than 300 bucks worth of car |
Big Jim raced one of those Kysoho 4wd cars at the Spring Championships in Atlanta. It was illegal then but allowed to race. He could not get it to last 8 minutes. But back then we were using Sanyo 1200's.

I HAVE ONE OF THOSE KYOSHO'S!!!
Its in a box of my uncles old stuff. God, I forgot all about that car. I started on the motor mounts for it. I did a CAD and gave it to my friend to take to the machine shop. He should be done with it tomorrow. I went with the 1/18 Mamba-25, I had one laying around that wasn't getting any use. I am not sure if I want to take the trouble to rig a single speed transmission. I know that a 2 speed on electrics serves no purpose, seeing as they make maximum tourqe at 0rpm. But it still sounds cool. Now, onto battery choices. Seeing as the fuel tank, throttle servo, and about half of the engine bay is empty, I've got to think batteries. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a custom 2S from cheapbaterypacks.com to take full advantage of all the empty space, and distribute the weight as evenly as possible. But in the meantime, I think I am going to take maybe some 4/5 C, 2/3 or 4/5 A batteries and play around with some configurations. I will post some pictures in a couple days. Any suggestions would be most helpful!! |

less than 300 bucks worth of car Oh well, mine will be cooler. and be cleaner. CF lower deck just came out and I ordered one. I was also thinking about maybe adding a half top deck. I have a scrap square foot of 2.5mm carbon fiber. If I can can better COG and weight distribution. |
Yeah, definately making a top deck. It would give me room for more batteries on a smaller motor, with better COG. All the holes are already there, it holds the throttle servo and gas tank. Can't wait until that lower CF plate comes in. Wonder if they would let me race it in the 1/12th class. Maybe if I took the belt off. I wonder how it'd do...:sneaky:

AHH, he beat me to the punch!! Only one doesn't look like a complete hack-job, and even that one isn't that clean. I am a stickler about how my electrics are set up. It just looks soooooo much better when there aren't wires hanging out all freakin over the place. Drives me crazy.
