Light vs. balanced?!?
Hey guys, I just finished building my TC5 and RTR without the body, pins and transponder it is obviously heavier on the electronics side. My question is should I add weight to balance the car side to side or not add any and keep the car as light as possible. I have a Spektrum sr3000, GTX esc, 27t brushed motor, and a digital Airtronics servo on the drivers side and run Orion 2s 3200mah LiPos on the right.

With the Lipo, brushed and those electronics, it most likely is not a lead sled. I'd go ahead and add weight to the far outboard side of the Lipo to balance it out. Or depending on the amount of space move the Rx and Transponder to the light side.

Balanced. I personally think that the whole lightweight thing is overrated. It is now to the point with all these ultra high tech alloys that you can easily spend 200 bucks on light weight parts though out your car only to find out that you can not make weight and then you are tossing on 2 dollar pieces of lead to the car to make weight. A balanced car that drives without surprises and that is predictable is 100x better than a really light car. Take a look around the pits where top racers are and you will see them with enough lead on their cars to sink a battleship, all of this is strategically placed to balance the car.

I think it comes down to priorities.
If you are racing in a race that is being run to race rules, weather club rules or ROAR. You must make the regulations.
It does not matter if you have a perfectly balanced car, 1000 dollars on lightweight parts or whatever. You need to be legal!
If you are racing at a venue which is not running under specific rules or "light" rules such as Tires, Motor and battery only. The get the balance right and don't worry about the weight!
You must have a car that is legal FIRST then everything else comes after!!
If weight is not a problem. Then the amount of weight needed to get balanced will not make a noticable difference to performance. So get balanced !

if I raced at a place without a weight rule I would either ask for a weight rule or get a Losi Type-R

Balanced.
I like light weight.. but until new tires come out that take advantage of a lighter lipo car that has no lead weight, I'll have to defer to balanced.

Unless against some local rules, my preference would be a larger battery to help balance out the car (will not only require less lead to balance, but will be faster).
On the other hand this isn't a $1 solution like adding some lead.
