Default Setup - what do YOU work on first?

Just thought I'd start a little topic on setup routines.

First time on a track with a new car or new tyres - what handling trait you focus on first? And what are your favoured settings to change?

Personally speaking (assuming tyres are controlled), I tend to work on the off-power turn-in of the car. I like to get it to do a nice smooth arc into the apex, with the car "squared off" and ready to put the power down for the exit - to my mind, everything else follows from there.

Normally I will start off by adjusting front spring rate. Then damping. Then I might change some roll centre shims. Finally I might add a bar if the track is smooth. I almost never change shock mounting position or ackerman or ride height.

When I'm happy with that, I will take a look at corner exit, trying to keep everything on the car balanced (no extreme differences in geometry or shock settings between the front and rear).

Over to you...

I start with checking the strack. if it similar to the track i was racing at before i will keep the setup i have on the car.

If the setup doesnt fit for this track i will begin with checking ride height and softness and hardness rear and front. If i want to fine tune i will change springs, oil or someting like camber, caster etc. Depends how the track feels and then i know what to change.

But Tweaking is what i do after every run.

My car is balanced and tweak set before I get to the track.
First up is expo and d/r. Then I look at the high speed/on thorttle sections to get the car to work. Then fine tune the infield. Could be somthing simple like adjusting the wing or getting dirty and redoing shocks.

Mostly what ever jumps up first gets tuned. But allmost always on-power is what Im looking for.

tweak
tires
springs
sway bars
roll centers
camber/caster adjustments
dampening if necessary

typically by that time i've got a setup that is close enough where all i need to do is throw some spacers in a few key places and i'm g2g.

of course i always show up to the track with a guestimated setup... typically i find that i only mess with roll centers and camber etc from that initial point.

I get my car balanced left/right. Then i set ride height all the way around the car. Drop it on the tweak board and finish it off. Done.

I just drive a few laps and see what does and doesn't work. I then correct those problems in the order they arise. It's not very scientific but it works
