Hey guys,

The local indoor carpet drift track just changed its schedule to allow touring car racing - rubber tires only, no tire sauce of any kind.

The carpet is not R/C racing carpet - it's the light gray color indoor/outdoor carpet you'd find at a home center. Works great for drifting, but I have no idea what rubber tires to use for touring car racing on this surface.

I have access to just about every compound of Sorex slicks made. Should I just start with the softest ones?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try 28's or 24's. 28's seem to be the choice on tracks with real racing carpet and allowing compound. So I would think start with the softer ones since there will be very low traction on the track.

back when we raced like that we found to run some old tires and it seemed the more wore out they got the better the traction , and that was most likely due to the rubber being real soft ,hehe or real thin

My local carpet track runs on rubber with no compound.

I have found that Sorex 20Rs provide the best grip, but dont last very long compared to a harder compound tyre. The Sorex 24Rs are almost as good in grip (especially when the track warms up a bit more) but last longer.

I have used Tamiya Type A's and these have been the best for tyre wear. They have lasted almost twice as long as a set of Sorex tyres, but I found them to have less grip than the softer compound tyres.

Much More Sweep 24Rs seem to be doing ok, just wouldnt get them premounted because I dont like the inserts and especially dont like the brittle easy to crack rims they come on. I would put these on Sorex A-Medium inserts with either the VTEC or SpeedMind rims.

I've noticed that the softest compound isnt always the best, especially for example where you are working the tyres very hard, on a small technical track.

I used a set of cs22's on such track and to start with the car felt quite good, but towards the end of the run the tyres went off, probably because the sidewalls/tyre in general heated up too much.

Sometimes this is a setup issue (too much initial steering/front toe out), sometimes it is a tyre issue.

I'd experiment with the two softest compounds to see what offers the best grip to wear ratio.

Ive only ever used sorex 24/28 with additive but the 24 gripped pretty well and appeared to be consistant on grip level, even after 2 hours of use I still liked how they performed.
