What will a center one way do for handling on the TC3 and TC4?

Does it let the front diff spin unpowered.

Is it like an all wheel drive effect where the front diff is only powered under acceleration?

I've never heard of a center one-way...Are you talking about a front one-way...?

No.

A center one way replaces the rear output shaft and driveshaft cup.

It will only free spin one way and lock the other way to apply power to the drive shaft (Hobby etc.com).

I would like to hear from experienced drivers how the part affects steering, braking and so forth.

I cant imagine any benifit from this that you wouldnt get using a conventional front oneway. BTW I have never seen one for a TC3

A center one way makes the car drive like it has a front one-way, but the effect is more mild.

It's basically half way between having no one-ways, and a front one-way.

Some aftermarket company makes them. There is no point in running it if you run a oneway

The double one-way is more common on dual-belt drive cars, for sure. Ultimately it frees up the one-way aspect of the drive train a bit more, but the performance difference is not that profound. Some drivers claim they can really feel it, while others can't feel a thing. Adding a center one-way to a one-way-equipped car will probably not produce much of a change.

I could see how it might affect a double belt drive car but on a TC3/4 I can't imagine it would really do anything....?

During braking, it allows your front wheels to free-wheel. Plus it allos you to run a conventional front diff/spool.

It handles the same as a one way off power, under power it handles like a diff. It will give you more steering off power than a diff, less steering on power than a one way.

So, the concensus of opinion is that while running one-way diffs front and rear and the addition of a center one-way would yield improved handling characteristics off power while no change in handling with power.

Well, it's already installed in the TC4 so we'll see how well it works and where it should be used.


Someday a true center diff will be created to provide AWD with bias towards the rear like the first AWD Quattro.

That's another thread completely.

Actually, I'd say a center diff for electric TC's is quite unlikely, as one would be quite heavy(compared to what's there now), & you don't want to add that much rotating mass to your drivetrain(not to mention the added cost & complexity). As for the shaft(center) one-way by GPM, I ran one for awhile, & it was ok, but as the others said it was just milder than a front one-way, but it's biggest advantage is if you hit something, you'll still have a regular diff up front that can slip & absorb the impact energy(while when using a front one-way or spool, it transfers ALL the energy to the drivetrain, & that usually breaks something, like the CVD's for example). That's why I've stopped using spools or one-ways, much easier on the drivetrain....

Aha! I knew someone would ask about this sometime, this was my favorite setup when I was driving a TC3 on rubber tires back in the day. I used the center one way with a diff up front. This setup gave a little more offpower steering, but didnt make the car uncontrollable on a loose track. It was one of my favorite setups for a long time. I may still have one downstairs if someone wants one!!!!
