Most folks here, we recommend them start the Novak 17.5 at a FDR of 4.0, which for you using the stock spur gear, 87T 48P, will be either a 43T pinion and FDR of 4.04 or the 44T @ 3.95 and an upper temp limit of 170-175 degrees after a 5 minute run per Novak. We do have some folks depending on the chassis, go as low as 3.5 FDR.

4.1 final drive, and only at 106f? that's impressive. you could drop to 3.0 or lower and still be at normal temps.

Losi Type R here, running 118/53 for a FDR of 4.08 both a Trinity duo 17.5 on a Losi Xcelorin speedo, and a Tekin Redline 17.5 on a Tekin RS speedo were pretty happy at that ratio.
High 3.xx to low 4.xx should get you in the ballpark for rubber. YMMV for foams...

you guys are talking crazy for me haha. I had my 13.5 geared at 4.5 forever, always came off between 155-185 depending on ambient temps. Now ive switched over to 17.5 and started as near as the Novak recommended 3.5 FDR. It was fast and competitive and coming off around 130-140. I was at 3.48 and went up another tooth on my pinion (geared 80spur/57pinion on my cyclone) and it was still coming off in the mid 140s.
Granted i use the LRP brushless/brushed heatsink motor fan thing. My friend with his xceleron 17.5 is geared at like 3.2 right now!

IS this rubber or foam you're running, and what sort of a track? I"m on rubber on a medium sized carpet track... If I went down to a big asphalt track i'd probably gear a lot taller... At Blue Diamond, we're gearing 10.5's at around 4.3 I'd think the 17.5's there would need to be in the low 3's, but no one runs 17.5 there...
