Hi, should I install the cooling fan so that the air is blowing from the motor, or to the motor?

definately blow the air towards the motor. Applications that require a fan to blow air away from the object are usually sealed devices that require a "vacuum" in order to introduce colder, higher pressure air into the low pressure area. This isn't the case in an Rc car where motor components and areas arn't neccesarily sealed, therefore the colder air can be introduced by means of air passing over the heated object, not by means of a vacuum to introduce higher pressure air into a specified area.

When I try to run it with the fan blowing on the motor, it gets really slow. Someone told me that the magnet of the motor gets in the way of the magnetic field of the fan. ???

I've had that happen to me.

Two solutions:

1) Move the fan a little further away from the motor.

2) Get some steel shim stock and make a magnetic shield over the fan motor.

I've done both.

Try turning the orientation of the fan. When I mounted my motor differently (rotated it) the fan worked again.

I used to use a heat sink with a fan mounted too it, when you were under hard acceleration the fan would almost stop due to the magnetic field of the motor, I got rid of it and have had no priblems since.
