Jerry Titus was killed at Road America in Wisconsin. Actually he was in a coma at the hospital for a few days then died. In fact the pit lane/infield access bridge he hit (and was subsequently named for him) was just torn out in the last couple years...I can't get used to not seeing it on the climb up from Canada Corner.

Ken Miles was the big name who was killed testing at Riverside in the Ford "J" car in late '66.

Pontiacs continued to be run after his death...pretty much EVERYBODY'S TA program "died" after 1970. The only real "factory" team in '71 was Penske's Javelins. Ford, Chevrolet, BOTH Mopar branches all were run by privateers from '71 on.

I'm pretty sure the Firebirds ran SBC engines. In fact (I'll think of his name as soon as I hit "submit"...Terry Goodson, Goodall...I should just break down and grab the book off my shelf) '69 Firebird was a re-capped Penske '68 Camaro.

In '70 they used an actual pontiac, the '67-'69 birds that ran previously used the 302 chevy but they wouldn't let them slide starting in '70 and made them use a Pontiac. The '70 303 was a short deck pontiac block with smaller 2.5" mains, forged crank and ram air IV heads. They worked on a mechanical fuel injection sohc 303 engine but it never went anywhere. The same block was used the '80-'81 301 turbo cars, but used a crappy crank. People still ran Pontiacs in trans am after his death, but Pontiac pretty much stopped support when Titus died.

Anyway, if you painted the '77-'78 body like the Titus T/A it'd look pretty close, not sure what you'd do about the Grill area - maybe just paint in 2 round headlights in place of the 4 square ones and paint the center of the nose straight instead of in the V shape. The rest of the body (minus the T-tops) would be the same. I have a '76 trans am body, which has a more similar nose to the early cars with round headlights, but it's in 1/12 scale.

This Mustang doesn't exactly have a "scale" paint job, but I found it on ebay and thought it was AWESOME!

That is an amazing real fire paint job. Taking a look at the USVTA rules it says
"It is highly preferred that bodies are detailed in race type livery in period-correct paint schemes. Fluorescent colors, wild graphics, chromes and non-period correct paint schemes are frowned upon."

It does not mention anything about flames, so I think this body would pass.

How long do you guys generally let a coat dry before you spray the next one? Do you use a fan or blow dryer at all to speed up the drying time?

Depending on the temperature of the air in the room that you are painting in, a safe number to use is 1 hour with a fan blowing dry air onto the paint. Generally speaking the warmer the air is in the room (and also the warmer you can get the paint prior to spraying) the quicker the paint job will go.

I wait about 15 minutes with no drying assists before the next coat if I'm using Pactra rattle cans, less if I'm using automotive lacquers. Then an hour before I remove the masks for painting multiple colors and always paint your dark colors first then your light ones.

Is anyone else getting tired of looking at supposed VTA cars that don't have reallistic paint? Yeah some of the bodies look good but........

Same with driver figure (some at the ROAR Nationals were 1/12 scale). It is a pity.

With regards to bodies we allow Australian muscle car bodies to race VTA which gives us a little more variety on the grid
