Hudy Comm lathe hints and Tips

I just bought a Hudy comm lathe with steel v guides. first off it says that i should use a source of 4.8 volts if useing a battery. Does this mean i must use a 4.8 volt source if i am using a dc power supply? My other question is is there any tips or tricks to using the thing. How much should i be taking of the armature at first.
Thanks

You should limit the voltage from whatever the source to about 3 - 6 volts.

Try to remove only the tiniest amount needed to set the com true. Maybe .001 or .002 inches at a time.
