Its 3800mah, isnt it? Just a few months ago people were saying 30C would be too expensive so it will be interesting to see the price.

The C rating is the new way of getting more money. It is like buying a NIMH pack that has higher voltage. The higher C rating will new marketing tool from all these compaines to sell Lipo packs. No different that companies selling NIMH packs with higher voltages and run times.

Ok...

I know the C rating will be the new catch phrase when selling lipos. I think people need to be objective when they look at the C rating and understand what it means.

The C rating has to do with how much a pack can discharge in amps. So an Orion 3600 25 C pack cannot handle more amperage than a 5000 20C pack(3.6A * 25 = 90A continuous vs. 5.0A * 20 = 100A continuous). In the case of this new pack you can get 114A continuous :cool:. So just keep that in mind with buying lipos. Also there is more factors than C rating that make a pack good, i.e. cell quality.

This is true, you can really only compare batteries using C rating AND capacity.

Kokam makes incredible cells, but the voltage is weak compared to their competitors. I wouldn't use Orion's packs in racing where voltage is important, but it would be my first choice where voltage doesn't matter.

"C" is market speak for "give me your money." Don't be fooled.

So in R/C car applications when running lets say a 3.5 type brushless what type of amps are we drawing at start up and what do we drawing continously? Any ideas on this?

well the japanese site says it's ¥12390 which is roughly translated to $130 so...it'll be in that ball park I'd say.

that's good to know. I will hold off on getting some SMC packs then. I'll try out the new packs. The 5000 will be good for mod and I'll try one 3800 for everything else. I just wish they kept the pos and neg the same from pack to pack.

Although C rate is being used as a marketing number and many are fibbing badly, it is a real engineering spec and increases cost. At lower loads it does not really show up. Our real 20C+ lipo is equal to or better than the 25C and higher batteries for average voltage with a 35amp load. Assuming everyone is telling the truth we would get a lot hotter at a 25C discharge or higher than them. Fortunately we do not draw huge current for long periods of time in RC so it may not be as important in these applications.

Higher quality cells can have a slightly lower voltage under light loads. They have a more conservative chemistry and are more stable. This also equals better durability and longer life. I doubt any voltage difference would show up on the track and should be more than overcome by the extra grunt during accel.

Our first shipment of 3400mah 20C packs come in next week. We also have 30C packs in development, but we think price to value this is the right answer for most. We are working on larger batteries with higher discharge rates with a clear focus on 1/8 scale.
