Tekin R1 Pro

4 cell 1/12 scale with a 17.5 where the gearing is really tall is not a good application for the R1. Unfortunately you need an RS or you will be disappointed with the starts.
I am not sure what you are saying about a brushed motor, but agree the Fx is a better choice in that application. However the R1 does make a very good brushed controller and the R1pro in brushed mode is the beefiest controller we make.

I was just thinking the R1 Pro seems much heavier than my FX-R. Is there anything to be gained by running the R1 instead of the FX? besides weight?

The R1 is a very good in brushed mode, but the Fx is truly optimized for brushed motors. The Fx has our patented fly back circuit that is unbeatable and appears to rock in terms of brush and comm wear and motor temps.
The R1pro is excellent with our sensorless motors or any other sensorless motors such as CC, Losi, Traxxas, HPI, Hacker and 1/8 multi pole motors like the Nue, Lerner, pletenburg and our 1/8 motors in design currently. Most prefer our sensorless/slotless motors in offroad due to the feel of more torque and lower kv.
It also works really well with mod sensored motors on 6 cells or more. We have some very good drivers racing 5 cell with the 3.5 in TC that are getting it done in the UK and offroad drivers with 5.5 and 6.5 that have few complaints. Of course these guys make few mistakes and only have to start once typically.
It does not work well in 4cell 1/12 or oval where gearing is literally 4" or more of car travel per motor revolution. It works pretty good with the 13.5 and 17.5 and even the 21.5 for the average club users with 6 cells or 2s lipo, but not good enough for top level competition racers. Although we do have users with the 10.5 and 13.5 winning at race tracks with little complaints.
Thats about as honest as I can be. Since 2 of 3 classes are now 13.5 and 17.5 motors in ROAR, for this crowd the RS is the answer for perfect starts and hard launches. The R1 has taken a beating on this forum. The general market loves it, especially in offroad 2wd and 4wd 1/10.

Version 180 is released for the R1 and RS speedos.
Even if you downloaded version 180 recently during the short time it was posted please do it over. Please uninstall your current hotwire using the windows add/remove programs and install the new version. Download the new .zip file from the website and run the setup.
We updated the hotwire a little also. We fixed the timing suggestion for the 3.5 motor, but I see we reversed the 4.5 and 5.5 motors…. We will catch that one next time when Chris gets back from climbing mountains in Canada. We also added a timing suggestion for the sensorless motors.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the answer. I have been using the R1 Pro with a 13.5 and I do like it while the car is running. I just find it difficult when I qualify first for the A but end up 3rd or 4th going into the first corner, providing another car has not wiped me out on the grid.
Will the software upgrades ever solve this problem completely, or should I reorganise my speed controls and use the R1 with brushed motors?

Use the R1 with our 632 or 537 in 2wd offroad mod and you will be happy. We have spent a tremendous amount of time on the 13.5 motor and do not intend to spend any more. It became a trade off between starting all the other motors really well and being able to start the 13.5 and 17.5 solid. Even with a solid start we can not launch as hard as we can with sensored on these low torque motors for an Amain start.

So I can run the R1 Pro with a sensorless 17.5 Tekin motor and be top of class?

The new Tekin 17.5 and 13.5 motors will be sensored. You won't get great starts with a 17.5 and the R1. You will get flawless starts with the RS and a 17.5 sensored motor.
The R1 works best with low wind modified motors especially in dirt. If you're trying to use the R1 in 12th or sedan with a high wind spec motor it's not going to start well. Once it's rolling it's fine and acts like a normal speedo (or at least mine did)

So I should save this for the brushed motor (27T)? Will it be better than the FX that I allready have or should I just sell the R1?

The R1 is a great esc. It works great with "mod" winds in Tc . Just get one of our Redline's and you will be set! I had good success with the Orion 4.5 in Tc.

If you are going to run brushed I would probably sell it an use the FX. Not that it would not be great, it would, but just saying if you are keeping the R1 only for brushed when you have an FX, it might not make a lost of sense. Then again, as the old saying goes, it isn't eating anything is it!?

Well I bought it thinking it was a sensored controller, for my Novak 17.5.
For Sale - R1 Pro . . .

Hi,
I have been reading the R1 and RS forums... I have the R1 Pro and my plan was to run it with the motors I had (team Orion 3.5,4.5, 5.5, 6.5 and 13.5) in Touring car 5 cell class....
now from what I am reading everyone is saying wait for RS. I am going to try to hook up everything today and see if it works but from people who tried it, or perhaps Tekin will drop a word or two, why dont you like the R1.
Everyone says no no but I see no whys...

Go ebay and get your self the old g12 from old Tekin which sell around for 15 dolars. Those thngs are in destructible and I think that ESC line is the reason Tekin went out of bussiness
Major Plus... reverse voltage protection..... you cant burn these things...
