Hi Danny,

Will the part number for the new 5000 pack remain the same; so, they are automatically ROAR legal from the get go?

Bill

Default Balancing

Danny,

I currently have LRP Pulsar 3 chargers. What equipment would you recommend for balancing the new SMC 5000 pack? It's OK if I have to use a separate discharging balancing unit. Just need to know. Thanks.

Still Bill- We have been using the Great Planes Equinox for balancing, and balance charging. For 30 bucks it does both!

This GP Equinox unit appears to be the same as what I currently have from Checkpoint to do my Orion 3600s In looking at the optional connections, it appears that I just need to order the adapter for the SMC 5000 pack to be good. Didn't know the optional adapters were available to make that happen. Kewl! Many thanks.

The LBA10 is really nice.

Getting a charger with one built in is even nicer.

As the balance connectors can only handle 3 amps I reccomend you modify the harness/adpater to make it charge up to 6 amps. You can easily do this by taking the stock harness and putting a Deans male connector on it or whatever connector you use on our packs. The harness has 5 wires. You take the outer red and outer black wires and solder them to a connector. You will then plug these into the power lead and the balance connector into the harness.

One of the problems with seperate balancers when used with chargers that don't have seperate voltage sensing leads like the GFX the voltage the charger will see when going through the balancer will be higher than what it actually is. This is because the balancer has resistance and which will make the charger see higher voltage. This means your pack will go into CV mode earlier and it will stay in CV mode much longer than it should. This is why a charger with built balancing is a better solution.

In my testing I have found that using the the balancer in discharge mode actually unbalances the pack. The only proper way of balancing is using balance charging.

Danny,

As usual...Thanks for that eye opening explanation.

Do you know of any balancers that are intended to work with the LRP Pulsar 3 or the GFX? Or...What is your favorite charger/balancer setup FOR THE SMC 4000/5000 PACKS?

Many thanks.

Bill

Since the GFX has seperate voltage sensing leads you can attach them to the Deans connector on the balancer harness. This will give you accurate readings as the voltage sensing leads bypass the balancer. I don't think this can be done with the LRP charger.

Since Lipos are proven to be as competitive as sub-c and I believe they will be around for awhile racers should look into getting a charger with built in balancer. These chargers aren't that expensive. The Hyperion EOS0610i is priced around 170.00 and can charge at 10 amps.

I have been using these with mine and they work well, very simple and you will notice the smc is never really in need of balancing anyways.
