Traveling Case for Airlines

I currently use an F8 transporter case for my 1/10th scale TC racing in my local area.

Will be flying to at least two out of area races this year. What is the best hard case for transporting equipment as checked baggage on an airline?

I figure to keep the overall weight of the case below 50 pounds.

Thanks.

i have an F10 bag and i travel to out of town races VIA airlines

just box up and wrap the little more breakable stuff and get the people at the check in at the airport to put a fragile sticker on the tag also go around the bag with a couple luggage straps (or duck tape)

or if you want the hard case route go to a luggage retailer and look into a hard suitcase and box up your stuff and put it all in like tetris

hope this helps,

M.

best ever, pretty much everyone that travels to races all the time uses these, myself included...

fill it with 48 pounds of gear and throw clothes in to fill the space, then do the same with your luggage and your good to go....

and you can lock up your stuff at the track to boot

im picking one of those up

we had those at cadet camp instead of lockers

the case is awesome....
I always pack a roll of duct tape for a just in case scenerio....
I travel for work weekly with tools and parts and believe me the airlines treat your baggage like its garbage....If your case gets hacked you can tape it up to get you home.....;)

this box posted above is what I use to travel with. I take out battery and motors and put them in with my clothes or I will ship those items to track or hotel to save a few pounds. buy a tsa lock throw in an Rc mag and most TSA agents will look at the magazine and leave most stuff alone just remember no traction componds and make sure all oils and grease have some sort of label on them plus I put them in zip locks and I also rubberband all small boxes I carry as they will open and you will be sorting screws for weeks to come.

see me at the track in a few weeks as I should have mine set up to get ready for nats soon.

I used a $100 hard case Samsonite for years, but last year was persuaded to try an inexpensive (and lighter = more equipment packed) 26" pullman rollaboard case. Mine's made by the Swiss Army Knife people and I bought it for like $50 at Marshall's on sale. Pack my stuff in kit boxes inside (RC-10 boxes are ideal), roll it right to the track, weighs 47 pounds fully loaded, and nothing breaks. Nice.

Follow other advice on here about shipping ALL FLUIDS and- at least these days- batteries in advance. Airlines DO NOT like you to fly with that stuff and will confiscate it. Don't even think about trying to convince a TSA inspector that your shock fluid is silicone based and non-flammable, or the difference between Lipo and Nimh cells. Not worth the hassle.

Custom made flight cases to my specifications (sizes)....
There are companies all over the place that builds flight cases to your measures and preferences ....

I've been using these:

Available in many different sizes, super strong, lockable, and inexpensive!

youre not allowed to put batteries in your check in luggage? what if your car is all finished with everything inside, and the remote and charger in another box, would they still confiscate it?

flameoutgarrett 02-02-2008 11:50 AM

they dont care about batteries,

i usually have around 60 packs in my carry on....tho most times they will destroy the box if you put them in the check... they were too lazy to open the box so they ripped half the top off...

batteries weight about a pound a pack....4 or 5 adds up pretty quick, packing for a race is a pain in the a$$....i have gotten pretty good at it tho, comming back with no scale is the hard part...

oh i see. Over the summer, i might put the car in a small box with some foam or bubblewrap, and the radio and charger along it, so i can drive it in Europe for the month or two im gone.

they only will not let you have LIPO batteries in your Checked in luggage.

you are allowed Lipo installed and one extra per device so one in raido and car wouls make it thru.
I like to ship my Batteries with the oils and stuff that way there is no isues with TSA.

Thanks for all the thoughtful ideas. I'm fairly set with the traveling case issue.

And the other thoughts are helpful too. Thanks.
