When the traction is up, the faster guys are quicker around the track with a 3.5 than with a 5.5. The difference can get up to 0.5 second a lap with 6 cell 4200's.
The step from a 4.5 to a 3.5 is (as expected) very small. Not because of the power, but because the 4.5 has the advantage that it's easier to gear correctly. For a Novak 3.5 you need a rollout of near 22-24mm. We can only get down to about 25mm/rev with small tires.
A 2.5 doesn't make sense at this point, because you can't get your rollout right.

For the record: 6 cell 4200 our lap times were already faster than the average 1/8th scale. We just gave up a few meters on the long straight on our hometrack.
With 4.5 and 3.5 Lipo we're faster all around the track. I even overtook some 1.8th cars on the straight.

Most of the US guys are testing 4 cell right now as most of out tracks are smaller and much tighter. The roll out for 5.5 4 cell is ~1.5" or 38mm on a 180'x 80' out door track. 10.5 on the same track is 71mm

hmm, CRC made me mad with the 3.2r to Gen X transition (asked frank some q's about the 3.2 ordered it and a week later the gen X was released) so that might be an alternative...

does anyone know how the speedmerchant speed spec II car will compare to the rest of the line up? the chassis is f/g and it has a different rear suspension.

The Speed Spec 2 is actually a spec class chassis. The front suspension is the old skool, and it doesn't have side damper tubes. The chassis is meant to run with 540 silver cans in a class with simular chassis. We have a class of them racing locally. It is a great class for people just learning car control, it is also just a fun class to run.

We originally started running this class with 19 turn motors, and found that it was way too much speed for the newer racer to handle. However, in a pro, it is really fun to watch (and race).

so then if running a 10.5/19t or faster in one of these cars, the speed spec II would be a no go.

You could race the Speed Spec 2 chassis in Pro 10 with whatever rules that your local track decides to use, as the chassis meets all the guidelines that we know of so far for Pro 10. However, the roller is heavier than the regular Pro 10 competition chassis (I.E. the Speed Merchant Formula Pro 10), and it also doesn't have the side damper tubes, as they aren't required when running a 540 silver can motor (they are also illegal for Speed Spec division). A 19/10.5 turn motor easily fits in the motor pod, and the chassis is definitely fun to drive with that much power in the chassis. With the heavy nerf plates on the edges of the chassis, there is little flex, and a wall slap will hardly ever break a rim.

The short answer to your question is; the Formula Pro 10 is designed from the ground up to compete in the Pro 10 class, and therefore is the more competitive choice between the two for racing in Pro 10. Whereas the Speed Spec chassis was designed from the ground up as a Spec class, fun durable chassis with the intent to help someone learn how to race without blowing half a salary buying replacement/aftermarket parts.

So we have 6 competition ready 10th pan chassis coming out (or already out) and one spec level chassis that could potentially be raced in the Pro10 (or GT10 class), and a number of older chassis that could be run as well. That is a pretty good variety.

I will probably be strapping a 19 turn motor into my Speed Spec 2 next time Bruce comes to the track to test. I think he needs a moving chicane to drive around. I have been using the NSX shell on mine.

please let us know about how the speedspec 2 works w/ the 19T. i remember seeing the origional speedspecs and i thought they were a great idea then. i think they also have the potential to be retrofitted w/ some damping tubes if need be for some GT10 action.
