2hundy - the definitive answer is YES, you will need to use the black o-rings in the outdrives for the TA03 ball diff. Yes, it will bind a little on full lock, but if you don't have the o-rings in there the outdrives will slide out, and you will either strip a spline, or your car will spin in circles due to having drive to just 1 wheel.
I've seen other solutions over the years. Some people run 53577 (the red urethane damper bushings) in place of o-rings. These will work, and will lessen the binding, but you will need to check them more often as they will wear faster than the black o-rings. The other solution is to threadlock (or superglue) the outdrives into the spline. This works well until you need to take the diff out in a hurry :-)

What and how much of what you put in the outdrives sort of depends. In most cases a single black o-ring works well. If however, you are using the rebuildable cvc, it can cause the suspension to bind up and not be able to be fully compressed. You may have to shave the o-ring a little which ain't easy. If you're running the plastic blade protectors, do not use the black o-rings.

The best solution I've found is to cut silicone fuel tubing to the correct length. The fuel tubing at my LHS was the same od as the o-rings. Put the fuel tubing inside a piece of brass tubing and slide out the amount you want, slice it off with a razor blade. The tubing is softer than the o-ring so it seems to work better and being able to make it any length you want has many advantages. Since only compressive forces are at work and no shear forces, it holds up well.

Jim, 1mm of fuel tubing with the R1Wurks CVD is about right for an M03.

Thanks for the tip Granpa. I don't have any unused fuel tubing at the moment but will pick some up for sure.

In the meantime I've punched some 5mm discs out of a 4mm thick foam body protector. Not sure how well they will hold up but they certainly keep the outdrives in place and because they are softer than the o rings, there is far less binding.

when i ran the TA03 diff, i liked to use a touring car shock rebound foam spacer, then i would cut it in half and place a piece either side, this would be perfect as being a little softer then the red/orange mini spacers it would cushion the dog bones and apply the right amount of pressure to keep the out drives in place and not cause any binding at all.

Odd. I've never used anything in the outdrives when running the ball diff and CVDs. Every time I tried, it would bind up under compression. Used o-rings when running dogbones though. Maybe I'm doing something weird.

No you're not, Jim. With the CVD you can get away with no spacer at all. With those there is only about 1mm of play and if you use the blades, generally, you need no spacer.

I use the one piece universals, and with those you need a spacer. It's a case by case scenario and does depend a bit on how anal you are.

Gotcha.

On a completely unrelated note, I've discovered that a 23t pinion and 33t ABR spur installed in the M03 make beautiful music together. I can't wait to get this thing onto a long flat stretch of ground!

Is the reinforced gear set #54277 a worthwhile purchase?

The stock pinion has discolored the spur and I want a fresh gear set to go with the new fluorine coated pinion.

Also, is it worth shimming the gear shafts? I notice the car makes a rattling noise when tilted left and right.

If you're running an M05/06, the reinforced gears are worthwhile. Discoloration shouldn't be an problem. Run 'em until they get noisy. The reinforced gears have some irritating fitment issues with the M03/04 chassis, so stick with the oldies in that case.

Never shimmed gears myself. I think they're just naturally sloppy.

If the spur is only discolored and not chipped or worn, keep it, if it's showing signs of wear replace. Mine is turning black but the teeth still looks new.

Shimming the gears is not worth it. The gear box is chattery and loose when new. It's designed that way.

My car has only Tamiya hop ups and has only 30g of extra weight added to it 20 in the nose and 10 opposite the motor. Would love to see where you have shaved 300g compared to my set up.

It seems most minis, running lipos and with no added weight are between 1220g and 1300g. My M03, with a "reinforced" body and an ounce of lead usually sits around 1235-1250. I've run everything from the 03 to the 06 and nothing ever came near 1500g, without adding a lot of weight. I'm guessing your NiMh pack is full of matter gathered from the center of a collapsed star.

If you use mini Tamiya universals with a TA03 ball diff, you can see that the dog bone end doesn't go all the way in the ball cup. At least 1 1/2mm gap. Also note that the splines on the TA03 diff outdrives have shorter splines. You can strip out one of the outdrive, if it came out under load while coming out the diff.

I think its better being safe, than sorry!
