Hey All, Like many right now some of my club members are hurting for tires. Anybody heard an update from HPI ??

On that note, can anyone tell me how good or bad the D compound slicks are ??

I can't afford to have drivers unable to race so I'm just considering them as an emergency option. Tried a history search but the site still has some issues when you attempt to pull up older posts.

Don't know about the slicks but the performance treaded tires did ok on our carpet track. They take a minute to break in and they wear quicker than vta tires but the traction was good during the "sweet spot" time.

Wish hpi would get on the ball. We can get fronts but rears aren't available. I just used up my last set so now I'm skating on ice out back.

Hey Rob - how come you're saying the center ring/heatsink fan setup is illegal, but you can remove the center ring for cooling?

I think it was because you dont have to spend any money to take the ring off. Nor do you have to grind or cut anything. You can still use an aftermarket fan.

Here is how I see the rules,

If you have to outlay cash to do anything (other than tires and bodies) that's a no-no

It's a pretty simple concept, kiss rule in effect. Get your setup and learn to drive it. stop trying to sidestep the rules with "well xx should be legal because it would give me an edge"

That type of thinking is what is destroying the other classes.

Think you are backwards there Scott. Fronts are the ones on nationwide backorder, rears are still available. This is opposite of what happened a few months ago.

Any heatsink costs money. I am not completely sure why the one that attaches around the motor replacing the ring is different from one that clamps on the outside.

The problem is this is a spec class. The more you tighten down the rules, the more people will look for those tiny advantages. I will tell you, it would be very nice if Novak motors were more consistent. Dyno 2twomotors and you can see several thousand RPM difference between them, even though both at 25.5's. There are people out there buying batches of motors, dynoing, and taking the best. It is the same with batteries. Those differences doesn't mean they will rocket past you like a boosted 17.5, but it's definitely worth a tenth here and there. Add those tenths up over the course of a race, and it's very difficult to keep up.

Myron said something earlier on this thread regarding batteries. He said if the fast guy came out with a $120 6500mah 65c battery and started winning, everyone would feel the need to do the same. The problem is that happens now. But it is a 5000mah pack, a $150 servo, or a dyno and 10 motors. Club level is one thing, as it will depend on the people there, but as soon as you start going to larger races, people are going to be running 3.0 FDR's and coming off at 200* and know that their motor is a throw away after the race. They are going to put that money into whatever they think makes them competitive.

We went up to Nashville to run some VTA with those folks, and the entire A-Main was driving camaro bodies. Guess what, several people picked up camaro bodies right after that. You can see my painted one in the other thread. I just painted up a mustang as well, and will be testing which of the 2 is faster in different circumstances.

Just to head off the, "practice more noob" comments that might come from this...I am at my track 4-5 days a week, and usually racing 2 of those, all VTA. I am hardly a good driver, but I run in the top 5 usually, and every little thing does add up and make a difference.

I found the above places that may have the front tires. The person on Ebay has a different stock number. Those may be older Vintage tires. One of the above is Active Power Sports and with them you never know if it's in stock or not until you order, and that may be true of Hobby Sports. By the way, when I was looking for the tires Go Hobbies was out of stock, but their price was $8.40. I think that's a very good price. Their shipping is a little slow.

Just FYI, the part number is HPI 4793. The ebay ones are correct, the others are not the regular legal vintage tires, but are what people are using to get by. They are not USVTA legal, but clubs are allowing them until the 4793's become available.

First part of march is when stores are expecting to get more in. I am glad I hoarded some back before the first shortage.

This has been common practice in other classes for a while, and it's only removing one part of the motor which is more decorative than anything else. It is also cost free.

Seriously, dyno all the motors you want. Dave Johnson (or anyone else with a ton of talent) will continue to crush everybody. This is not oval racing.

There are guys around this neck of the woods who have driving talent and properly set up cars who issue beat downs with motors that are probably fused into their cars at this point. The point is the slower the class, the more the chassis comes into play. When we first started doing this, a bunch of guys who raced the silver can sedan classes at the Tamiya races began to dominate because their cars were so much better. Once the rest of us caught on, the racing really got good. We never went to the dyno. Their cars were never "way faster in a straight line". They just worked.

As far as bodies, the Camaro is most popular because it is one piece. So is the Pegasus Mustang. They usually last the longest.

That being said, I have won races with the HPI Plymouth, the Pegasus 70 Camaro (baddest looking body!), and the 1/9 (j/k) Pegasus Cuda. One of the fastest guys who used to run up here only ran Parma Cudas. He beat us like rented mules with a shoebox mounted on his car. Mike Haynes used to do the same thing.

LOL at straight line speeds.

People seem to forget that this isn't drag racing. There's a turn leading to the straight and a turn afterwards. Hit the turns right and that's where you lower your lap times.
