Lipo Guards for TC
 

I have Xray T2 and I want to use my Max amps 6000 lipo battery, but I'm concerned about side impact.

I would like to make some kind of guard or bumper to protect it .

I found the following pictures of a guard that a guy from Max Amps made that looks pretty nice , but I don't know If I could make some thing like that with out an old chassis to use.

I was wondering if any one else has come up with a easy way to protect a lipo from a side impact in a TC.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't buy any LiPo that needed a fabricated carbon exoskeleton to protect it from any impacts. There is a reason companies make hard cased LiPos...

Agreed, I would use a hard case LiPo and save yoursef a lot of grief

Don't be afraid of running LiPos without a plastic case. Take a look at the side protection I put on my T2. The LiPo is fully protected and the guard acts as a place to add weight to help balance the car. It's nothing more than two servo mounts with a piece of Kydex screwed on. A couple pieces of foam add to the protection. There's several of us at the local track that have been running this type of guard since September without any problems. And there have been some very good side impacts crashes with zero failures. BTW we run SMC Lipos.

They look good, but most all tracks and series here will only allow hard case, so i'm sticking with that I guess

What is Kydex , and where can I get some ?

As far as the suggestions to use a hard case Lipos , Thanks but I already have these battery's and I use them for off-road, which is what I mainly race, I only race on-road once in while.

I really don't have the money to buy another expensive hard case Lipo.

I didn't think this would turn into a Hard or soft case debate, but I really don't think that the hard cases are really going to offer that much more protection to the Lipo, in a hard side impact, thats just my opinion.

Kydex is the type of plastic used in front bumpers. You should be able to pick some in your local hobby shop. If not, Tower carries it.

The side brace can be made out of many materials. One of the local racers used a piece of old graphite chassis cut down to fit.

What type of servo mounts are you using?

I want to say they are Losi but I'm not sure. They could be HPI. Any servo mount would do the trick though.

If you want Kydex, don't buy it from Tower. Get it from McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). It costs less than one third the tower price. Here is a mcmaster part number: 8650K112

Well I thought I would post some pictures of what I ended up making for my T2.
I ended up using a Losi battery strap and a couple of Associated servo mounts and some fake carbon fiber stickers.

I think it ended up looking pretty clean.
