Default For the LiFe of Batteries is LiFeSO4 batteries the answer

Is it just me or has the portable power tool industy and laptop makers switched over to LiFe based batteries: LiFeSO4, LiFeS2, Maganese, Colbalt, and Nickle-Colbalt-Maganese mixture. I just can't help but notice Black&Decker, Dell, Sony, Bosch, Craftsmen to name a few that are using these safer batteries. Some of these batterues are capable of up to 60C burst as with the A123systems that use LiFeS04.

Majority of these batteries can be found in working voltages of 3.2 to 3.8V. Generally the lower voltage cells are more capable of higher currents which leads me to the 1.5V LiFeS2 batteries. These batteries were developed to be a safer alternative to NiMH to be used in miners head lamps with lights similar to SureFire lights. The power density would be slightly better than todays NiMh and since manufacutres of portable power devices are demanding LiFe based batteries the technology will be developed faster than with NiMh which I would say the industry feels is maxed out in capacity.
