I am running 64p on my Pro4 100spur/26pinion. Now, I adjust the mesh according to what has been sited many times (paper in between the teeth, not too tight, not too loose). My problem is the sound....sounds like I am running 48p. I call it the "dirty whir".....after you run a truck in the dirt, it has the light grinding sound. Initially, I though it was the diffs and/or the tranny. Without the motor set in the motor mound, tranny is smooth as butter. Any suggestions? I like my electric to be quiet...not with the "dirty whir".

I don't ever use the paper trick for 64 pitch gears. Most paper is too thick and allow too much backlash. That can also cause a lot noise. If you are going to use paper, try newspaper. Personally I just eyeball mine so there is just the slightest "tick" between gears. Make sure you also rotate the gears and set the "tick" at the tightest spot.

Have you tried another spur? Maybe it's too tough or low quality.

If you are using a 26 tooth spur do this...Take a 27 tooth spur and tighten the pinion to the spur and make the mesh tight. Then remove the 27 tooth pinion and put on the 26 tooth pinion. Your mesh should be spot on after that.

Agreed, I've noticed that some brands of spur just make more noise with certain brands of pinion, so you might try more mixing & mnatching brands to see if that affects it(personally, I like Kimborough's spurs with Robinson pinions, not exactly silent but it doesn't sound dirty either, & it's plenty smooth for my tastes).....

I put the pinion and spur gear firmly togther and tighten the motor mount screws snug. Then I back the motor off just a tiny bit. I make sure that I have a small amount of play between the gears. Don't forget to retighten the motor. I have never tried the paper method. Seems like most paper would leave a large gap between the gears.

How profound!

Another thing, as gears wear down, they will naturally develop more lash even though the depth of the mesh appears to be correct. When this wearing of the face of the teeth gets deep enough, it will develop a noticeably louder tone.
