3 hole, always. Never yet felt comfortable with the car using 2 holes. Maybe different if I were to try drilling out the pistons, but I'm lazy, and the 3 holes work fine

What feel of the car does the 3 hole piston give you that is better for you than the two? Also, would that be with a kit/similar oil?

I just got my WE up from my 416 and the setup is a bit different than what I had been running. A good day of testing will help me figure some things out though!

Usual ranges of oil, from 30wt to 50wt. Generally I found a 40-50 good on the front, with 35-45 on the rear. I'm currently running 450wt all round indoors, and probably wouldn't change it too much for outside.

As for the feel, the 3 holes felt smoother and more consistent to drive, and coped much better with bumps. That's probably due to the reduced pack in the shock.

A good little guide on setting up the shocks is as follows (this is taken from Richard Taylors tuning tips for Losi off-roaders, but the same applies on-road)

To increase pack, go from an orange piston to a red piston (smaller piston holes = more pack). If this makes the car feel too stiff in roll, you can at the same time lower the weight of the oil, by 5 to 10 weight, this will still make the car stiffer initially but still have a soft feel once moving.

To decrease pack - go from an orange piston to a blue piston (bigger piston holes = less pack). If this makes the car feel too soft in roll, you can at the same time increase the weight of the oil, by 5 to 10 weight, this will still make the car feel softer initially but will still have a stiffer feel once moving.
A car with less pack will cope with bumps better, but may roll more, so go to slightly heavier oils too counteract that.

Ed

Thanks for the help Ed!

I am going out to the old AV Tamiya track (well...I can dream since waking up is hard) and do a little testing so we'll see how it goes. from what I gather though, the changes in setup from my 416 to 416WE will be minor. I don't like the 3.5 rear toe angle, and running 13.5, it's way too extreme for me.

just tested my WE and honestly i dont feel the difference from my 416 with the Jilles set up.
Do you have the 416 with the short arms, just upgrade the topplate , dampers and the motor mount and save your buck

The top deck isn't even really an upgrade, but a tuning option, right? All I really want is that and the new belts. The motor mount doesn't really seem like a big deal unless it's a lot lighter, since I'm not racing mod.

What's the story, exactly, on the new dampers? Do they hold more oil, or just smoother?
