The One True 13.5 Thread
Today, the Orion 13.5 brushless motor showed up, thus completing the availability of "stock" brushless from the three big sensored motor manufacturers.
Basically, three companies are making sensored brushless motors right now that are readily available to consumers. Those are Novak, LRP and Feigao. Novak and LRP only sell motors under their own brands, while Feigao is the OEM source for several companies, including Orion, GM and SpeedPassion.
We've seen posts from Charlie saying that all the companies are working together with the sanctioning bodies to create a standard for spec brushless motors to ensure they're as even as possible. Many of us assume that 13.5 motors will be the new "stock," and 10.5 motors will be the new spec mod (19T). Presumably, those will be the two motors where there's focus on design limitations, with all others being considered open mod, and possibly not subject to the same limitations. It's not clear how today's 13.5 motors will fit into those rules.
There are a lot of 13.5 threads floating around, but I figured it would be good to unify them all into one place. Many stock racers have already switched over, and I imagine as time goes on, we'll see a lot of other people make the jump as well. Hopefully we can use this thread as a single point of reference and resource for these motors.

Not yet. I may try to get to the track Sunday and test it out. It definitely makes a different noise than the other two. The Feiago motors have a fan on the rotor, which makes kind of a loud whistling noise, and also supposedly keeps them cooler.
I didn't measure air gap, but I believe the Orion's is the largest based on just eyeing it, and also the fact that it was extremely difficult to get it back inside the bottom bearing since the rotor had so much room to flop around.

Given that the performance is suppose to be "relatively" the same, what do you think are the significant product differentiators that would make someone choose one motor over the other?

So is the 13.5 going to be dubbed the stock equivalent or is it looking like a 17.5?

I think they're all going to be really close to be honest. I haven't driven the Novak with the 13mm rotor yet. I did drive the LRP, and I definitely prefer its feel and increase drag brake over the Novak, but I think the 13mm rotor will make the Novak feel the same as the LRP. I imagine other people will do exhaustive testing to see which is better, but at this point, they all seem relatively close.

The guys talking up the 17.5 for stock are using it with LiPo (7.4V) in pan cars. Basically, they're saying LiPo+17.5 is about the same speed as 4cell+27T brushed. So, really, unless you're doing pan car stuff, forget about the 17.5 as stock.
In 12th scale, the gap between a 13.5 and 27T stock seems to be a lot more pronounced. I don't know why, maybe the lighter cars favor the BL motors? It's not clear, but considering 13.5 "stock" may only really apply to sedans and electric off-road.
