can someone explain drag brake to me
and why i do or don't want it programmed into my esc?

Drag Brake turns the dead band area between throttle and brakes into a preset amount of brakes, which eliminates the time, or dead space, to travel from brakes to throttle.
Example - if running a 19T, when using drag brake, it will give the feel of a stock motor (bogging down) off power.
It more of a driving style / personal preference if you would want to run it or not IMO.

When you return throttle to it's resting position you can dial in some brake so the car slows down when you let off completely. How much or little is up to you. Don

so rather than coasting off-throttle, there is a minor amount of braking applied?

Some people who run 13.5 BL etc use it to create the off-power braking effect of a brushed motor.
Try it and see how it feels, it might also depend on the layout.

I run a tight lay out and I run about 12% on my 13.5 brushless. It slows the car enough, that when I return to throttle it's not azz loose.

now would you typically dial this in in your radio or in your ESC? I use a GTB w/ 13.5

BUT, maybe somebody mix things, because automatic brake makes that slight motor brake action in netral range or off power how you want to call it.
I`m running 17t class with Novak ss5800 brushless and i use a lot of automatic brake at i feel that same like brushed motor...

Drag brake... hmm. LRP call it initial brake which allows you to set a certain level of hand brake effect.
BUT, maybe somebody mix things, because automatic brake makes that slight motor brake action in netral range or off power how you want to call it.
I`m running 17t class with Novak ss5800 brushless and i use a lot of automatic brake at i feel that same like brushed motor...

On a brushless motor system drag brake is used to simulate a the natural resistance of a brushed motor. I personal like it set to about 30% on my Mamba Max. It seems to give enough break to enter into a turn without having to use the normal breaks. Think of it like motor breaking in a 1:1 car when driving a manual.

which is more common drag brake on an esc or just dialing in some break into your radio when running 19t and mod?
