Cool

Hey Shawn.

I lied, I got one more question for you. How much for the GT hand held programmer thingy. I love gadgets, so I got to get one of those too.

Your answers have been great to hear so far, as far as how to handle motor blow ups etc, I don't have much to offer yet as I am new to BL. Not sure what are common issues yet, so others can maybe provide ideas.

Thanks,
Steve

My question is do we having the ESC lipo cutoff just an added safety feature for people?

I only have GTBs now that do not have the Lipo cutoff. But I only run my quals 5 minutes and practice 5mins or less at a time. To me there's not point in turning lap after lap if you know your car is working if you have the layout down pretty good. On the flipside why keep turning laps after 2 or 3 if you know your car sucks LOL.

Please let us know either way about Lipo and the SP line of ESC. To me I don't think it will matter because I run without Lipo cutoffs now.

Thanks.

I second this. I have run my Orions down to the cut off on my sphere before, but by the time it gets there the car is not worth driving. I think the cut-off is mostly something bashers would use as a racer would have pulled thier car long before it got down close to 6 volts. I pull my car once the times have dropped about .8 of a second or so and it is still at about 7 volts. That gives me about 14 minutes of run time with an Orion 4800 and a 13.5 on carpet at race speeds.

In a perfect world we'd have an auto cutoff that works even when the esc is off. I have ruined batteries before because I left them plugged in for the week and the ghost drain dropped it too low. Idiot me!!

SP product going out into distribution should arrive somewhere around the 20th(ish) Maybe sooner, maybe later.

Ran the GT controller friday, and it has several cutoff options done the correct way that are safe to drive the car all the way to the point where it won't run anymore.

Correct - most top level guys are going to practice in 5 min runs just like it was a race, and as long as you recharge, it doesn't matter what your ESC is doing or not doing to protect the lipo. I just have a real issue as a long time proponent of lipo and brushless use in cars in general with any product claiming to be lipo "safe" when it is clearly not.

The vast majority of participants in the hobby are casual racers or non-racers who absolutely will run a pack all the way down if the ESC says it's safe to do so. Their practice time and playtime don't automatically end in 5min intervals like they do for you, so the ESCs I bring in HAVE to have completely correct and accurate cutoffs for them. I've been part of the lipo/BL solution for years now - I'm not going to start becoming the "problem" now! LOL :-)
