Default 12th scale GTP to 5 minutes?

The interest is growing big time for 12th scale racing. There lies a problem though for big races like Vegas and the 'birds. The entries have to be limited because there is just not enough time to run a ton of 8 minute races, when touring cars are 5 minutes. You can run basically 6 touring heats to 4 GTP heats. That's 20 more entries. So why not go back to 5 minute races, maybe 8 minute A-mains? This will allow more racers in 12th at big races. Will the industry accept this I wonder?

have you been racing longer them me?
in my 21 years of racing it has never been 5 minutes for 12th scale accept on oval. now back in the days of 1200sc packs and parma enduro 23t motors the local track that I ran at ran 7 minutes, but changed a couple years later to 8 minutes when the 1400scr came out. that was like 1989
there was a time that the only class to run at the us indoor champs in cleveland was 12th scale and they got by fine running 8 minutes.

the novak race is touring cars only which is why you'll never catch me racing it. 12th scale is cheaper and you get more run time. take that away and I'll stick to 8th scale nitro and yes I just said that.

it's a shame that 12th scale doesn't get the reconition that it should have as the hardest class to drive hands down. TC is for rookies and track time. 12th scale will always be faster even with 4 cell and even more now that tc is going to 5 cell. all TC cars are the bastard children of tamiya and HPI

Sorry, I vote a BIG no. Not to mention the history of 1/12th scale. 2nd oldest class, much older than the modern Touring Car. I think big races should limit their entries down a few anyways. Just my opinion.

I also have to say no 8 mins is about perfect.Sadly some races limit thier 1/12 most likely due to time.At cleveland last year I believe it was 80 1/12 scales just in stock alone.Sure 5 mins would get more people into the race but 8 mins has defined this class over the years.I think by going to 5 mins you will turn alot of people off to the class.

I also think 8 min. 1/12th heats should stay.
I even think longer heats for TC would be a good solution for their heat problems, ok, you'll get the same situation as with the 2000's that you need very good packs. But with the packs from nowadays if you wanna be competitive you need new packs every month anyway.
At least with 8 min its not the power/heat factor that determines a high ranking driver. It'll come down to power control, just like in the days of the 2000s and 1/12...

Why should big races dictate what happens down to the grass roots level?

I see no point in limiting the number of entries in a class at a big race. Let the market decide which class should have more entries. If you get more 12th scale entries then you shrink the TC class. Perhaps if some of the big races didn't offer 6 or so different TC classes they could make more room for the 12th scale crowd as well.

I think we could easily raise the time to 10 or 12min. When we can race 8min with Brushed 9t and 3700 cells we could easily drive 12min with 4200 cells and Brushless.

I vote 8 min for TC too. I think your point about snowbirds and stuff is kind of backwards. If I spend thousands of dollars to go to an event like that the extra 3 min would at least give me more track time.

yes but if you do that you would kill every large or semi large event including roar races and so forth because more time = less people = less money. Those races would just disappear as it would be pointless to organize them.So basicly do what you want but there is a cost to the things you do.

As most large events don't make a ton money like everyone always thinks. The people that put on these races do it for the love of r/c sure if you can make a buck fine but that's not the point the point is to get alot of people together and have some fun it's point that is missed alot.

12th = 8 minutes. It's always been that way, and should continue.

If it were up to me, everything would be 8 minutes or more. TC, offroad, oval, all of it, even 1/8th scale.

If you want to save 3 minutes per heat, change touring to two minutes. This way, you will be less likely to burn up your stuff during the run. Saves on time and equipment.
