Hey fellas,

I've got t1fk05 that i havn't used since christmas. The time has come to get back to the track. Just wanted to know what's the best way to clean and oil the bearings for it?

for metal shielded bearings i use a needle or pin to pry out the thin metal lock ring on both sides of the bearing. with the lock ring and the metal shields removed, i dunk the bearing in a film can half filed with cleaner spray, cover it then shake it like you would a margarita. after shaking, take the bearings out, place them on a paper towel, oil them up then place the metal shielding and the lock ring back.

Thanks for the info VooDooPH. My bearings have blue rubber seals through. Will that make a difference?

I use an ultra-sonic cleaner, put your bearings in the metho or kero in the ultrasonic cleaner and all the grit will come out of the bearing.

not so sure how to remove the covers on a rubber shielded bearing. you can try prying them off with a needle though (be gentle though so you don't break it). but everything else should be the same in terms of cleaning it.

I would use a ultra sonic cleaner. I've had mine for years. Just put your cleaning agent in and turn it on.You don't have to mess with the seals- all the grit will come out. Dry them out and spin them to see if they are worn out. Reoil and they are ready to go.I also use the USC to re oil the bearings with Marvel Mystery oil the same way.
I got my stainless steam tub cleaner I think I ordered it from a jewelry store many years ago. I did try one of those cheap plastic jobs - only the plastic melted with the cleaning agent.

Harbor Freight has quite a selection of ultrasonic cleaners. Even the $30 one indicates it has a stainless steel tank. All run on household current rather than a couple of AA batteries...

For those cleaning the USC way what solvet do you use? I picked up one of the harbor freight jobs and denatured alcohol, it cleaned well enough but I still had to remove the seals to let get all the grit out.

Spray your bearings with brake cleaner or CO-Contact Cleaner.

On the xray bearings its virtually impossible to get the blue shim out without stuffing it.Get it out and leave 1 side out for good.
Then put it on a pen and spin it with your finger and spray with motor spray then re oil it.
