Hi there again, I'm from the Slot car scene but just getting into the RC scene and wondering about the different types of brushes.
In slot cars there are a couple of types, Vertical and Horizontal brushes are used...

In the RC scene i have read about Laydown brushes....My question is. Are Laydown brushes they the same as Horizontal brushes in slot cars?

in rc there is lay down and stand up

stand up are tall but thin and used in mod motors

laydown are shorter but fater(stand up turned on its side)

Don't forget P-94 (one big square)

I've never even really seen a slot car, but I'm sure that rc brushes are much larger if that's what your asking?

Laydown (horizontal) brushes are for stock
Standup (vertical) brushes are for mod
P-94 is for mod

There are some freak motors that don't follow that, but that's pretty much how it goes...

Ok thanks Pimpedaccord, That's what i thought. Exactly the same as slot cars as well but RC scene call them differently....

Obviously the slot car brushes are smaller but they work on the same principal.

Slot cars now have Gold dust brushes which have a higher conductivity...They are expensive but they are worth the extra expense. Maybe the RC companies should try that out as well.

The new Reedy Krypton Mod's uses laydown brushes.

In slot cars even the open motors are using horizontal (laydown) brushes. They found to give more power due to they have more wrap around effect on the comm where as the vertical ones have less friction and will therefor make the arm easier to spin easier they have found they are coverting back to horizontal brushes on mod motors now because of the technology is getting better..

Right, the R/C motor designers are simply using what they know from slot car motor experience & incorporating them into the bigger motors, & trying to find the right compromise between speed, torque & efficiency(though with the bigger motors there does seem to be some minor differences in how those tricks work). For example, laydown brushes seem best in stock class motors(since power is the most important need & today's batteries make run time problems non-existant), but in mods the cogging effect can hurt their efficiency too much, so they usually use standard(standup) brushes or a more squared brush like the P-94 design....

slot cars uses laydown becaues the comm is a larger diamater Vs the rest of the motor, like the new Reedy Krypton. I think?

Slot cars use vertical brushes as well but they are only more common in the group 7 and group 27 motors
