ok,

i just need some answers to a few questions.

1- im running an fk05 and when meshing the pinion and spur gears it binds to an extent, you can hear the two meshing whilst racing, almost like a grinding noise when racing. now ive tried different meshes and that is not the problem however im running 84 tooth spur and 20 tooth pinion, it was suggested to me that this gear ratio is way out, what are your recommendations?

2- are there any tips or tricks to get a nice speed from 540 silver can motors? not really modding the motor or anything, more just the way the car is set up.

You wouldnt have un matching pinion pitches would u? It sounds like u could be running a 48P pinion and a 64p spur or vise versa.

possibly, im only knew to electric rc cars, so sorry if its a stupid question but whats the pitches?

Correct me if im wrong but i think its the angle or material the pinions and spur are made from (Pretty sure its the angle) Anyway, if they arent matching it makes a grinding noise and doesnt mesh properly. Theres no real way to tell way pitch they are as it usually isnt writen on them. If u have a local hobby shop nearby go see them, they should be able to tell if they are not matching/or supply a pinion that does.

ah k, i get it so there are different pinion types that fit the corresponding spur types (different pitches?).

well i wont worry about finding one to match the current, ill try find the best pinion and spur teeth numbers and pickup ones that will run seamlessly. so i spose the other question is what ratio should i run?

What type of motor are u running? is it just a normal silver can ?

that is a great program that lets u put in ur spur and pinion and internal ratio depending on ur car and it will tell u ur gear ratio. I have never run silver can but im sure someone on here can tell u a sutible ratio. From there try a few combinations to make that ratio. U can also measure ur rollout but entering ur wheel diameter.

The pitch is how many teeth there are per inch.

for silvercan try starting out at about a 40mm rollout

hmm so what would be the best ratio to be running? or what tooth numbered spur and pinions?

your running at gosford or mingara arnt you ? for either of these tracks on the fk05 use either a 81 or 84 tooth spur gear & between 30 to 36 pinion gear whichever will give you between 40 to 45 rollout,these bieng 48 pitch as they seem to be more readily available than 64 pitch ones

how can i find the pitch of a spur gear? as the one im currently running is 84 tooth and i want to get a pinion that wont cause this binding its causing.

If you race at Gosford next Sunday 3/6/07, come and see me I will give you some XRay pinion gears to go with the 84 Tooth spur you are using. These are 48 pitch gears. A simple way of telling the difference is the gaps between the teeth on the 48 pitch gears are wider apart than on the 64 pitch gears.

Anyway if you are racing next Sunday both Warwick (war11x) and I can help you out with the gearing. As the prof said earlier a good rollout for 540 at Gosford is around the 40 - 42mm.
