Default Mamba by Castle Creations - Thoughts

Anyone here running the Mamba Max system by Castle Creations?

How is it working out? Would you recommend it? What are the drawbacks?

thanks

As a brushless system, it's a bunch of power at a very low price. As a brushed ESC, it's a no-limit ESC at a very low price.

There are a bunch of drawbacks and disadvantages to it, though. Here are some I'm aware of. Some bother me, some don't.
-Motor is bloody heavy
-ESC is big and heavy
-Guaranteed to cost you three car lengths at the start of a race
-Motor doesn't have solder tabs
-ESC doesn't have solder posts
-Quite a few people have issue with it glitching and stuttering
-Some people dislike its braking feel
-Some people dislike its mid-throttle feel

(I own a Mamba Max 5700 system and a Mamba Max 4600 system, both used in touring cars)

I was hoping that the Mamba Max was as good as my Schulze.... I guess not. My Schulze has no startup problems and has never lost me any ground on the starts.

I have a 7700 system and I have ZERO start up issues. If you have a problem hook up your Mamba Max to you PC and download the latest firmware.

The Motor is no heavier than any other mod BR or BL motor.

The Speedo is lighter than the Sphere and GTB and covers about the same square inchage.

I have had two mamba systems and had startup, and intermittent hesitation problems using some of the best equipment around. If you plan on racing, save yourself the headache of getting a Mamba max.

I race with a Mamba system on a regular basis in my off road truck and 4 wheel buggy. I have only seen the problems that they are describing when using a spektrum system.

I use the Futaba 2.4 gHz fast system and have not had any stuttering on startup issues.

Another guy that I know has been having startup and stuttering issues and he is using the Spektrum pro system. He switched back to crystals and the problem went away.

I have also heard of people having the same issue with other brands of esc's as well.

The Max systems if very smooth and responsive.

i m using mamba 7700 for my stallion touring lower epa n gear ratio. Very fast in fact too fast. Once i hit parts will break, the esc never thermal running sometimes at 104 degree. its even faster than Novak 3.5

Thinking of getting 5700 motor.

I have a Mamba Max (1/10th) 7700 & had a 5700 as well as own the Mamba (1/18th) 5400, 6900, & 8000. When I had my first Mamba for the 1/18th, it did have cogging issues, but with Castle Creations constantly working to improve their software, that problem was completely resolved. This was a large part of the reason that I bought two more along with switching over from my Novak GTB 5.5R & SS5800+. If you're looking for a good value with the flexibility, I would say that you can't really go wrong with the Mamba.

The issues with the stuttering that people are referring to are usually for the following reasons:
- Batteries or wiring may not be sufficient.
- Spektrum receiver needs a minimum of I think it was 5V to operate and anytime it dips below this, it will glitch. Usually problem is resolved with the cap that Spektrum released.
- Overgeared: If it isn't one of the above issues, this is a large part of what causes the stuttering. The motor & esc draw so much current from overgearing, that sometimes what it can draw isn't sufficient to get the car going which is why you see the stuttering. A lot of people don't seem to understand this, but you have to understand how the sensorless brushless systems work. The esc is basically an amplifier that when it sees a load from the back emf of the motor leads, it will try to drive the motor harder by applying more power to it which is what causes the current draw. I have a prime example of how this happens because a friend of mine overgeared his Mamba Max 5700 in a truggy conversion he did and it literally melted down two of his battery packs. After I told him to regear it, it didn't stutter anymore and ran perfectly fine.

Uninstall Castle Link. Go to the website and download Castle Link 3.0

Then install the software. Plug in the USB cable and then open Castle Link. Is the light for the USB conncection green or red? If it is green then plug in your esc. If not either post back or PM so we can resolve this.

Thanks,

I have a Mamba 7700 in my FT TC4 that i race. I have notice hesitations on standing starts and 1 hesitation during a 5 min run usually around the 2 min mark. The system is great for play and race.
