Tamiya TA-05 IFS is in Shizuoka 2007 hobby show. More pictures: http://rcforum.co.kr/news/entry/Shiz...amiya-TA05-IFS |
Hey, the IFS has its own thread now! :D
Man, this car is so cool its sick! I wonder if it has enough in common with the standard TA05 that I could convert my already tricked out TA05 to a tricked out TA05IFS. :D |

I sure HOPE there will be a conversion... Doesn't LOOK like there is much to it.. GOTTA get those pieces..
|
I want this also. How wicked would this be? I bet a conversion kit will be about half the cost of the new kit.
|
Doesn't look like there's much to it. I'm sure if Tamiya doesn't come out with a conversion kit somebody else will. They need to make one for the front and rear, and mount the shocks lengthwise. (like an F1 car)
|
Besides the super slammed body, what handling characteristics are we looking at? I imagine different ratio rockers and such. Any thoughts??

So this thing is going to be a chassis geek's wet dream. I like the concept and would like to see more of this work it's way into TC.
|
where's our F201 experts? gone in to hiding a long time ago...lol |
I used to race the F201 for ages but that was a long time ago. It will be hard to compare the two I think to an extent due to the fact that we used to race on the F201 tyres which are completelely different in regards to how a touring car tyre reacts (much bigger sidewall and flex). Mix that with the fact that it was a longwheelbase chassis and it wasn't easy to control droop, makes them very different, even if the front suspension theory is similiar.
|
Doesn't look like much droop available for control.
Interesting combination  |
Interesting idea. It reminds me of the front rocker setup on the Tenth Technology predators
The rear suspension should be inboard too though methinks. That would be truly awesome but the size restrictions prevent that I suspect :( |

I ran a T Tech T1R a few years back and it was fine. Once it was setup, that was it...it worked. I don't think we had the adjustability but who knows, maybe this will? The car was very sensitive to droop settings, possibly more due to the other characteristics of the chassis. |
I ran the Streetwise, which wasnt too far off par with the top spec kits, the bud drives were a pretty cool idea, but mine usually popped off so I had to superglue them together, lol.
The geometry was a cool F1 inspired idea, I still think it deserves a place in modern day t/cars though, so its good to see Tamiya give it a shot :) |
yeah i remember the Predator well .When they hit the tracks in the 90's they rocked the boat in a big way.Was more like total domination here in SA.
Was a awesome car in 27t stock and mod. |
I was a loyal fan of the predator, I also had the XT, 95 pro off road, then a national but I upgraded it quite a bit. They were pretty fragile, even after the webbed wishbones came out, but they were very responsive, some would even say that they were twitchy if you pushed them hard. Impressive when we are talking about the days of 2000 nicad cells.
Richard Weatherley came up with a good platform for a car. I would love to see a TC with fully inboard suspension  I think T/C could utilise them well. |
I was wondering where this talk was. I mean the thread was already 11 post old! I was starting to think this thread wasn't gonna receive the car thread initiation of "you know so-and-so did this first". Cause you can't have a car thread on rctech without its initiation.
Yeah, most of us here do know that the Tenth Tech car had inboard suspension. But its not the suspension that has people interested. Its the bodies that you'll be able to run WITH the suspension that has people excited. Because last time I checked, the Tenth Tech didn't come with a $45-$50 body that was a darned near perfect rendering of the the full scale car. This car is just a way for those of us who are a little sick of cloned bodies with different headlight decals, to run something different and more realistic. And maybe bring a little fun back to TC class. And of course a TCS race with a full field of cars with lower bodies would be amazing. So no body here is forgetting Tenth Tech, and I don't recall anyone here saying Tamiya did this first. Heck this isn't even THEIR first car with inboard suspension. The TA05 is a popular car, and this just gives the fans of the car new body options and adds a few new owners to the TA05 camp. So now that the thread has been initiated with the 'who did it first'...or....'its a copy'...or....'yada yada' comments, now this thread is official and rctech certified. Now hopfully we wont have to hear about the Tenth Tech car again. It was a great car that, unfortunately, never got enough use here in the states, but its not what Tamiya was shooting for here. |
Hell, Im not slating the Tamiya, I wouldnt race the '05 if I didnt think it was worthy of being raced, I think its great they got the inboard thing going again.
But theres a flip side to the conversation (as there always is with any topic) that if you're going to do something, go the full hog and make it fully inboard or not at all. Space limitation, as said though, probably prevents this from happening, but the *other car* managed to do it ok. Just for info (and not to pick bones) The lower spec Streetwise touring car came with a very rugged bodyshell, I used mine on a tc3 for 2 seasons and its still looking pretty strong now. Lets keep the topic on a level note :) |

We do a points series with non-standard bodies and this would open up a whole new category of cars. And yes, the TCS series is awesome because of Tamiya's realistic non-standard bodies. But it is getting a little old trying to slam an NSX body onto the 415's front shock tower. The only concern I have would be the IFS's chassis-side shock mounts. Are these molded into the chassis? If so, when they get ripped out are you now buying a new chassis instead of a shock tower? Also, any F201 vets out there will remember the time spent getting those rockers to turn just right. But at least now we'd have droop screws and real arms... -Sean http://rcforum.co.kr/show/shizuoka2007/1109557640.jpg |
To my eyes the shocks are mounted on the existing chassis brace holes.
There may be some additional bracing beneath, hard to tell how much/if any. If the shocks are mounted directly to the chassis that will be a damage point and if the front chassis bracing is reduced this car will have a lot of flex too. |

From the pics it looks like the mounts are made into a new from K member brace. No worries!!! I bet it will be sweet! TCS'08 Baby!!!! :D Brant |

Brant Did you keep your 05? I hope you're right about the IFS because that bottom shock mount looks like it's molded into the chassis in this pic... Holla back and fix the Memphis problem while your at it... -Sean |
If the chassis is a problem with its front shock mountings (and I doubt it is, unless you strip the thread for the screw that holds on the suspension:eek: :flaming: ) then the chassis could always be milled out and a third party could always machine an alloy/other metal part for the suspension to link onto the chassis.

I hope Pook is right and it's just a K member. It would still mean disassembling the whole front end. :( -Sean |
I really like to look of the IFS, and the new body set, but as far as using this car for any serious racing, I have my doubts. The standard configuration on most rc cars, has the shock in direct connection with the lower arm, with ample angle positioning options for needed track grip adjustments. The IFS setup seems to far removed, too many connections, too much room for added slack in the suspension and lack of adjustability when compared to the standard shock setup of today. If a class race of just IFS cars with these low from end body styles comes around, I think it could be alot of fun, but having these cars compete against a standard TA05, or msx type of car, I doubt it could keep up - JMHO.
|
looks like it really needs stiff springs. Is this meant for carpet?
|
|
Great car, even better body! Stratus clone bodies need not apply! :D |
Oh, and you can definitely see from that last pic that there are some kind of extensions mounted to the chassis for the front shocks. That means if theres breakage, it'll likely mean a new parts tree and a few minutes to replace, not a new chassis.
|
I would definately think the suspension would "feel" softer with that setup...I guess we'll see how it performs.

That's a lot of time and money on the end of the car that receives the most hits. That looks like an ear for the mounting hole. There would be no milling that out if it cracked or broke off...

That body just looks so nice I think im going to have to buy one! That and to check out the new suspension first hand. Looks like the parts for the MS IFS are coming from Square, assuming from the tiny Square sticker on the front fender. None the less, i guess it will be out in Japan soon and we will get to see some reviews and pics.

Dude!!!! I totally want one of those!!!!
|
I need one...
That looks ssswwwweeeetttt!!!!!!! |

Okay, this is the one that I was waiting for. Personally, I don't really care for belt-drive. The IFS looked cool with the front suspension, but when you have something hopped up/TRF version, that is something I would definitely want to consider buying. Maybe they'll come out with a new EVO with this front suspension. Hmmm?
You picking one up...would look nutz right next to your genetic 4wd.. SSWWWEEEEETTTT!!!!! |
Nice shell...Probably get one for my F103GT.Sorry for the irrelevance.
