hi guys
Greater Western Sydney Remote Control Car Club has staged its first 1/8 electric on road class running, we had 4 entrants with 2 of the cars still new and under developed and we had a few teething issues but fun was had by all and onlookers were impressed. our 1/10 235 modified cars are still faster around our track and both classes are in a battle to post our ( meaning our crew which runs in both classes ) first sub 20 second lap, our 1/10 record is at 20.45 seconds while 1/8 record is 20.80 seconds, so the race is on and it will be interesting, achieving this time around here was only a fantasy a few months ago but we are closing in. if anyone wants to join us in either 1/8 electric on road or 1/10 235mm outlaw, join us at whalan reserve for our club meets every 2nd & 4th sundays of the month. by the way 1/8 gt electric cars are also welcome to race in 1/8 EP.
happy racing to all
cheers

it is with great sadness that i inform you of the death of our class in sydney, unfortunately the focus has been on our pet class 1/10 tc lola and 1/8 on road is a background attraction, i myself sold my car ( yes i lost money ) it was too complex and expensive to run for me, i bought a 1/12th pan instead .
while this class does have a future i believe it will probably be more for people who love 1/8 on road and noise restrictions have shut them down.
good luck to all those dedicated souls who run this class, i wish you all the best
cheers

hi...we have a 1/8 size track and exactly like you say the nitro was shut down due to noise as the resisdential nearby developed.
The usual electric classes are the majority but we are running 1/8th too...mostly me at the moment. Its easily the fastest class here.. our track is large/open.
I really wanted to say (in contradiction) That I find it is not expensive and it is reliable and easily as fast as the nitro we used to run (not that it really matters). I use a standard 966E...4S. The top speed is fine (97km/h) and the lap times / race times are well up there. Of course the torque is great! I love this class I see it as a noise friendly alternative to 1/8th nitro... and where we cant run lengthy finals, it definatly has other obvious perks.

Thumbs up

well done jeff, it is a spectacular class to run and watch, it probably is cheaper then nitro once set up, i was more referring to cost in comparison to 1/10 or 1/12 electric. my mates still have theres and love em,..
cheers

hmm..well compared to 1/10th, they wear the tyres a bit quicker...maybe...depends what speeds the pro10 is doing of course.
It will be costing me about twice as much for batterys.. I am hoping they will last 1 year before puffing (so far so good). should last the same as my Mod TC because they come off at the similar temps and voltage per cell.
Ive found some cheap gear is as good of better than some expensive gear.
Reducing weight might be best way to go. I like the 4cell...its fast enough (2400kv motor) and weight is 2700 w/body.
I have made some changes to the 966e biggest weight loss maybe taking out the bottom battery tray and I used a flat piece of 1mm thick polycarbonate instead.
I ditched the top battery cover too and used 2 strips of strap tape face-to-face clamped down with screws. now the battery is 3mm lower overall.
New cells fit better aswell, the main tray is flush with top deck...and no havent had any battery come loose.
Some other minimal gains from using titanium etc.
(also I now see that "nivola" has posted some info about our track already)
Glad to hear some other guys ther are still running them..get the weight down keep them tidy and simple....dont use the mechanical brake (implies not having a one-way bearing from the nitro)...should be fast.
Jeff

Finally getting around to my GTP2E setup. Doing the RC Monster gear conversion to a 46T and getting the car ready to run laps. I ordered 20-24 pinions for it also. I still need some different springs, but don't really know how the car will act in cornering at this point.

As far as cost of class. Batteries do cost more, but they are a consumable for the hobby. Tires are a bit more expensive than 1/10 TC, but the wear on a treaded belted tire should be a lot better than slicks. I'm not doing insane speed runs either. I picked up a couple sets of Sweep EXP 45s premounted with the V2 inserts to try. Should be fun!

Interesting that there is no top view... I guess they didn't want to spill all the beans

im really glad to see this they have made significant changes to the cars layout to suit electric power. the "why run electric" section they wrote is pretty spot on too.
NICE WORK SERPENT. hope to see some of these cars show up at my track in the near future!

these cars always 300mm wheelbase or just under (adjustable), check the specs for 977.

Right, Thanks! Thinking about it after I notice the body was the typical 1/8 and that it was running foamies, no doubt a 290-300mm

The new design takes into account the todays battery, speedo and motor technology and makes best use of it. The 1/8 speedo, 2 x 3S batteries and a 2000 KV brushless motor as complete package make the Viper 977-e accelerate like crazy and achieve very similar or even faster laptimes than gaspowered. Run-time is already close to 5.5 minutes as well.

We choose for the 2 x 3S batteries as those are easy to get everywhere, and enable playing with balance / weight well too.

Why run a 1/8 scale EP onroad racecar ? Well there are some reasons:
- The sheer speed and power
- No noise in tracks where this is an issue ( sometime only eveningtime )
- No mechanic / helper needed to race
- Cleaner 
- Just different , try something new
- Greener 
- Lower running cost is possible but depends on proper use of speedo and batteries

For existing Viper 977 gaspowered drivers, we may also offer a conversion kit, so at end of season they can convert their GP 977 into EP to give it a try.

Final testing is in full progress and soon production can start.

Team Serpent

Designed for 6s power, these things are blistering fast!

Very nice!

However, it doesn't look like the 977e will be compatible with the TTB system which, according to many on this thread, is a big disadvantage mostly attributed to not having a centralized 6s battery.

Wouldn't mind having everyone thoughts on this.

i think standard packs are a big plus? they changed layout to suit them..the two stick packs are located more central. you can see all this yourself with your own eyeballs
so the car is more adapted than previous nitro car conversions and no longer need a special fuel tank sized custom battery.
if there was eventual rules made up for this class how do you think the battery section would read?
