Default Compatability of brushless ESC's and motors between makes

Among major brands like LRP and Novak, what is the compatibility of the motors and esc's, aside from obvious issues like exceeding the limits of the esc? Do they all follow the roar compatibility for the plugs and wires? Do you lose any features like motor thermal monitering? I'm thinking of buying a Novak 13.5 to use with an LRP Sphere Comp. Is it simply plug and play?

I am pretty sure that you do lose thermal monitoring for the motor using that combo. The GTB monitors temp on both the ESC and motor and unless updates have been made, the Sphere only monitors ESC temp. Other than that, there are features the sphere has that the GTB doesn't. I think the motor temp monitoring isn't quite as important if you run the sintered rotor as well. It helps keep temp down.

Same connector and configuration, or do you have to change plugs, splice wires, etc?

The sensor wire is the same on the Novak and LRP so the motors are swappable. The three motor wires just need to be connected to the right tabs on the motor.

My self and another racer have smoked 4300's using the Sphere. The thermal protection to the motor seems to not work. And then my Sphere quit working.
So I went 100% Novak and have had no trouble what so ever. I would stick to the GTB and the assortment of motor options they have. But this was all before we started using the sintered rotor, I would guess that may help but it would be risky.
And the wiring is all the same, (ABC compatible).

Castle Creations Mamba Max: Cm36, C4, E40, Neo
Sphere: Same as GTB
Sphere Comp: Same as GTB
GTB: Same as SS+
SS+: C40, E40, Velociti, SS, HV, Neo1
Quark Roadster: CM36, C4, E40, Neo
Quark Comp: CM36, C4, E40, Neo

This is the chart of all major brushless ESC's and motors. The motors listed after the ESC are the ones that will work with that ESC.
(C4 is Dynamite
C40 and E40 are Hacker
Neo is Trinity
CM36 is CC
Neo1 is Lrp)

Anyone else experience a problem mating an LRP esc to a Novak motor? Any experiences with the 13.5 Novak motor and an LRP esc?

Around here it is the most common configuration. If you are getting a new 13.5 you likely wont have an issue with the motor getting smoked (due to the new sintered rotor).

Thanks, you've put my mind at ease. I just ordered a new 13.5 SS Pro to go along with my Sphere Comp. I would think that whether the thermal sensor in the motor is effective or not, it would be only wise to do some testing to determine the right gearing just as I would a brush motor. Run it progressively longer on the track while checking temperature periodically.

So I typically wind up gearing up a few teeth from what I ran with a stock 27t brush motor? I'm looking forward to having some long run times with a lipo battery and this combo in my stadium truck.

If you indeed get the one with the sintered rotor (verify) then it is a lot more teeth then a stock motor. Stock motor might be around a 25MM rollout. People are running the new 13.5 around 38MM+ rollouts.

Novak SS, SS+ escs:
4300, 5800, 8.5T SS Pro, 10.5T SS Pro, and 13.5T SS Pro motors

Novak GTB escs (including 4-cell and Spread Spectrum versions):
all of the motors above plus the Velociti series motors.

Novak's HV esc should be used with the HV motors.

The C40 and E40 are sensorless and cannot be used with Novak's sensored motor controllers.

LRP's Sphere is similar to Novak's SS+ esc.

LRP's (earlier v.) Sphere Comp can be used with motors 5.5T or higher.

You will get sintered rotors from now on. Charles from Novak has confirmed they are no longer making the 1st and 2nd generation 13.5's. The new Pro version is the current production model and it's being sold at the same price. Differences are: sintered rotor, ribbed can, colored timing ring.

Those are the only differences, so purchasing a sintered rotor to put in your old 13.5 will produce the same power as the new Pro version.

Yeh, mine on order is the "Pro" version from Tower. I looked at Novak's site and they say that the new sintered 13.5 will be labled "Pro".
