You shouldn't need that much tape for 1/12th scale. If you round the edge that the tape goes over, it should get rid of about 25% of the reason why you'd need to use multiple layers. The other thing that will get rid of about 25% more reasons to have to use layers, tape the batteries tight. If there is any slack in the tape, when the batteries take out the slack due to track incidents, that momentum is enough to rip the tape, usually at a sharp edge. I follow these rules of thumb and rarely have a tape breakage issue, with only one layer.

Well, the other 50%? Don't hit stuff, and make good passing decisions...

I use a single layer of tape. I have been since my first RC10L back on 1989. I still use one layer on my Sedan and 1/12th cars.
